do you think they actually make their own paint? like there is a big paint factory at the JD dealership?

they oem it just like 99.9999% of the rest of the oem'ers that sell 'factory' paint.

just look at the formulation .. and the actual maker to make comparisons.
IE.. compair alkyd with alkyd, modified to modified. urethanes to urethanes. etc.

alsys look at if it is a single stage or base clear... can't compair apples to oranges..e tc.

No, I am sure they do not. Valspar makes most of it. OP wanted to know what people are using and the only guy I know with experience uses JD paint.

Valspar currently makes JD paint. The trick with JD paint from the dealer is to make sure you put hardener in the paint. Mix the hardener 1:10. Mix the paint and hardener and then let the mixture sit for 20 minutes to activate before you spray the paint. I have used JD paint without the hardener and it is soft and fades. The hardener makes the paint much tougher, helps it retain gloss, and slows fading. The next step up is urethane paint - either single stage or two stage. I've started using the two stage paint as I don't have a paint booth and end up sanding the single stage and clear coating it anyway - at that point, might as well use two stage paint.

The original DuPont paint codes for JD are 262 for green and 263 for yellow if you're interested in urethane paint. I've used the Nason paint and it works fine. Imron is about another 40% (or more) premium over the Nason. Chromabase is the DuPont two stage color system.

I painted the sun shade on my tractor earlier this year with the Nason single stage and ended up sanding it and clearing it - should have just used a two-stage system. The nice thing about using clear is that you can get it with UV protectants.

You can always shoot a clear over the JD dealer paint. You might want to get a quart of the JD green + hardener from the dealer and shoot some tests with it. Nason 497 clear is about $40 a quart and will spray over the JD paint. Which ever way you go, I'd use an epoxy primer and shoot whichever paint you choose over the epoxy primer.

The only problem with the epoxy primer is that you need to shoot the primer, and then put the color coat on within about 1 hour. If you don't do that, you're going to have to scuff up the paint to get the color coat to adhere. If you end up having to do that, use a Scotchbrite type grey pad, and a bucket of water with dish soap in it and just scrub the surface with the grey pad - there's no need to sand the surface unless you have orange peel some other surface paint defect.

Like so many things in life we all have our own needs. My take on the paint is these are tractors after all and why would they need an expensive paint job. Personally, like the tin to be straight with as little bondo as possible and a properly applied paint job. Our 50 resto we had the paint done at a body shop very beautiful but not like original. Our 60 I did with JD rattle cans it looks perfect in my eyes. It took a lot of practice to get it to look right but it does and for a whole lot less money. Again I emphasize personally.

Have to add after last years Fair season saw a tractor there that all the cast iron was ground smooth them a pro paint job applied with too much clear. Wow! is all I can say and it did not look natural. The tires had that wet look another thing I do not like, dripping with Armorall. I talked with the owner he says the tractor had no fluids inside to keep it looking pristine

Our tractors get compliments all the time for how they look and run. Again we all have our own needs, I do like straight tin, at least very close maintained paint taking care of chips and any rust when it shows. Also keep the grease and oil cleaned off, after a day of plowing will always clean the tractors even the plows or other equipment.
Have to admit like looking at the show tractors knowing how much work it took to get them looking like they do. These tractors would look out of place with spreader on back slinging manure in my eyes. A very good friend of mine has a show tractor and that is all he does with it.
