I have a new PHD for my BX22 - - bought it from Vassar in Perkins OK - - nice people. They even cut the drive shaft for me.

This is the first gizmo I've run from the rear PTO. I lubed the plastic sleeve that fits over the drive line & understand it is supposed to stay in place while the shaft inside spins. Mine spins with the shaft. What is supposed to keep it in place?
Sorry about the ignorant question!

(2) small chains (screen door size) attach to the PTO shield and the tractor for one chain, and the PTO shield and the impliment for the second chain. Use the shields, and read up on PTO safety if you have not run a PTO shaft before - they produce some of the ugliest injuries and fatalities.

Like Bob said, some come with small chains that keep that plastic shield from turning with the PTO driveshaft, but some do not have those chains. There's no problem with the plastic shield turning, too. IF that shield is in good condition, and you touch it or get against it, it should stop turning instead of grabbing you and wrapping your around the driveshaft as would happen without the shield. Now my personal recommendation is: (1) just don't take any chances and touch or grab it any time when the PTO is turning, and (2) periodically, with the PTO off and nothing turning, see if you can turn the plastic shield by hand to make sure it's not stuck to the driveshaft.

Like Bird said...Some come with chains at both ends, that keep the shield from turning. Then some don't have chains, they are made to stop turning if something touches them while the PTO is turning.

Thanks all. I'll see about the chains, although the plastic shield turns easily and I only operate the PHD from the tractor seat, so I think I'm OK. And so far I'm the only person around when I've had it in operation.

Thanks to all - - I hear and take to heart the safety messages.

I found that I actually prefer the ones that let the shield turn with the driveshaft. Those shields won't wear out as fast as the ones that are chained, and I figure anyone seeing it turning will be that much more reluctant to get near it.
