Another pond question

All these pond questions, made me think of one of my own. We have a real marshy section of our lawn that is always muddy, usually with a couple of inches of standing water. I have to be real careful when I mow there with my tractor. It seems like there's a spring there. I asked our friends that we bought our property from, and they told me that area used to be a small fish pond that they filled in. It's not a big area, maybe 15 feet by 15 feet. The area is about 10 feet from a year round creek. I'm thinking of digging it up with a backhoe, and letting the spring fill it up to create a natural small fishpond, like it used to be. Maybe just stocking it with decorative fish (goldfish or koi) and plants. The original pond was not artificially areated, and supported fish, so it makes sense to me, that if I just dig it up, we will have a natural fish pond. However, my idea of common sense is usually flawed. Does anyone have any ideas if this will or won't work? If my idea is dumb, tell me!

Got a spot like that myself, only mine's a little bigger. I'm toying with the same idea, so it'll be interesting to see what everyone thinks and what you do.

You fish pond question reminds me of my property in Texas. House with three acres barn and horse or two. It had a little pond that held water about half the year. The owner before me redug it, the one before him filled it in, the one before that dug it the first time... I believe it was a small backhoe dug thing both times... The berm was hard to mow around in summer and the mud hole was impossible to mow near in winter... One's cute pond is another's pain.....
