I don't know what the test standard is, rolling off a cliff?

I'm pretty sure you could Swiss cheese these things and they would still hold up in an average slow, side lay over or even a climb over backwards. they seem to be well over engineered.

Maybe a slow side rollover, but I wouldn't want to chance a rear roll over. That's quite fast with a lot of inertia.

The OSHA standard specifies even harsher conditions. One test is first a backflip, followed by driving 10mph toward a ramp and running one side only up the ramp forcing a 10mph sliding rollover.

I wrote about the formal standard in this old thread and a search here on '1928.52' shows other similar threads.

G'day over here it is a definate and big no no to weld, drill or modify a ROPS in any fashion at all as this will alter the structual integrity of the frame from when it was maufactured, although i have seen some of the welding jobs and i'm no welder but i think i could have done a better job. However if i modify a rops and 10 - 20 even 30 years down the track that tractor falls of a cliff and the rops fails and someone gets hurt then ultimately it comes back on me even if the machine has been through several owners since. If you want to mount to a ROPS then make a nice neat bracket that bolts or clamps around the outside of the frame and weld to it

Drilling or welding a ROPS is a no no
And states so on the Plate or is stamped in the frame
They are certified as made by the manufacture and if altered it's not there problem but who ever did the modifications.

If you are not certified to do this type of welding they will come looking for you

Any changes made to the ROPS not done by a certified engineer is a no no

When i was an apprentice i ran one of the D-9 dozers and rolled different old machines over when they were doing design testing on ROPS and cabs
We pulled them over with long cables sideways down 1 1/2 to 1 slopes
to simulate a rollover

The loaders and dozers we did get to roll over but most of the big scrapers didn't roll over along with the blades

We had to semi wrap the cables around them so it would put them into a roll
as they went over the edge but some would only roll on there sides and slide part way down the 100 ft slope and had to be dragged to the bottom and be rolled completely over

According to the design team that we worked with the structure has to withstand about 2 to 4 times the machines weight due to angular impact
forces during a rollover

A friend of mine rolled a D-9G on it's top and the only injury he got was landing on his head and shoulders when he came to rest and he popped his seat belt and couldn't hold himself up with one arm

Lesson one.>>>>>>WEAR THE SEAT BELT<<<<<<<<<<<

I would love to see videos of that testing if you know of any online. Or even photos. Awesome!

Sorry but that was back in the early 80's and i didn't have my camera with me.

This was being done at the Operating Engineers apprenticeship school operating site the union was doing a coordinated study with the design team and others.

What they were doing was redesigning the to newer short cabs they use as of the late 80' early 90'...using lighter alloy steels ETC..
You used to be able to stand up in the old cabs

Me and the other 9 operator got to do this because we were the most experienced operators there at the time.
Paul the head of the school came and pulled the 2 of us from class to do this.
Brownie Points........without brown nosing :D
