Update on the German Shepherd puppy, he's almost 7 months old, 70 lbs. and at least 24 in. tall @ shoulder. He's killed 3 moles, an opossum, and at least one mouse that I've found. He's got a heck of bark for such a young dog and seems to pay attention a lot better than the mix breed rescue. Now if I only would take the time to train him more.

Kevin

Killing moles?? Good dog.

DSCN8525.JPGNot sure if you're asking questions in your post, but I'll reply anyway.

Our place is in an area with questionable neighbors, and we are mostly there on the weekends, and occasionally during the week. We have a gate, and keep it locked when we're there. I've made the mistake, after 5 years, of leaving the gate open, and it's a magnet for visitors, which we don't care to have while we're there.

As for the dogs, we own two female White German Shepherds that are half sisters, two years apart in age, appear (to the casual observer) to be identical, and are fairly imposing to most humans and animals that meet up with them. They stand guard 24/7. I don't need a driveway monitor, just some dog food........

I'll get two more pups soon, as my dogs are getting up there in age. I'm a firm believer in dogs learning from dogs.

I don't have a lot of tolerance for people, but I'd lay down for these dogs.

I like gates.....

Sounds like your friend had a Great Pyrenees dog - originally from France. Bred to protect sheep and other livestock in the mountains, against wolves bears etc. Great family dogs but need plenty of space and the like to roam around property. Very protective and great with children they know.

Very nice! I hadn't heard of that breed before but I understand the perimeter patrol he does. There are a few other breeds that do the same thing. A friend of mine had a dog, I can't remember the breed, that did the same thing. She would make laps around the property all night long letting out a bark at the same points around the perimeter like clock work. Maybe someone else knows the breed, she was about 120 pounds, as big as a Saint Bernard and all white.

Only way to stop them is a gate. I finally tired of the late night turn arounds in my yard and gated the drive with a Mighty Mule opener. Problem solved.

Just bought some adjoining property and planning to move the fence and gate up to the intersection.
