Our dog is a Black Mouth Cur (BMC). He is a neutered Male of about 75 lbs. He'll be 2 years old this month. He thinks it is his job to guard us and our property. He comes by this naturally. He patrols a certain perimeter of our property and does not roam. Nothing gets by him, animal or person. He's not mean but he's not friendly either. He is intimidating. He is very good at his job. Meet MF Jones. http://s166.photobucket.com/user/GregBKH/media/pics008_zpsd7b3cc76.jpg.html

Lokks like Old Yeller!

Here is our ferocious Airedale Terrier on guard, making sure no squirrels invade the deck.

Ok, so he's only 14 weeks old, but he's growing!

I have two Dakota motion alarms. Like you, I have them give different tones so I know if they've passed Point A AND Point B. Works well for peace of mind!

I talked to a tech guy at Dakota. They are super helpful!! He explained to me how to best set up the "electric eye" on those motion units. He said they work best when pointed at a 90 degree angle across the driveway and at a height right around where the "average car's radiator would be." He said that the beam is only about 3' wide when it's 50' out, so it's pretty tight. I have my units mounted on trees and they're each pointed at a tree directly across the driveway from their mounting places. That way it minimizes branches, etc. setting it off.

Those Dakota's also have the ability to trigger a 12V relay in the unit. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking about hooking it up to trigger a GPS tracking device that a bought to put in my (elderly) dad's car. It has different alerts that you can wire up and then it will text you with the alert.

I also bought a DropCam several months ago. I like it pretty well although it will send "motion alerts" on bright, sunny days when a cloud passes over. It thinks that the shade is motion.

The combination of the Dakota and the DropCam works pretty well for me. I work from home but my office is in the walkout basement. But I can watch the DropCam in a browser window. So when the Dakota goes off, I can simply switch to the browser to see who/what is coming up the driveway.

Good stuff! I'm leaning towards the buried magnetic detector with a +mile range with at least two monitors, one for the house, one for my shop. The +mile range should make it over hill where my gate plus the 1400' or so to the house area.

Thanks,

Shooting over a hill and through woods will definitely reduce the range of the MURS, but if needed you can always add a directional antenna with gain like I did. It added about another $100 total with antenna, mast, cable, etc..

Also be advised; the MURS signal is just regular VHF between 151.820MHz and 154.600MHz, so you can use ANY VHF receiver tuned to whatever channel you are using. I use my old portable VHF scanner as a mobile receiver.

Does anyone make a wired version of the Dakota MURS? I want to run power to a gate as well as fiber optic for an IP camera for our 1/4 mile drive I'm building. Several friends have mentioned a solar powered gate but I have other stuff I want to run too and don't want a setup that's easy to mess with. The land we bought was undeveloped for years so all the teen boys in the area grew up hunting on it and riding their motorcycles all over the place without permission from anyone (owner lived out of state) so now I'm having a time with them.

Signs don't work....dogs don't work....and driveway alarms don't work (but Dakota Alert MURS is the best one I've found).....I've got all three. If people CAN drive up a drive, they will.

IF you're really serious about privacy, get a gate. Doesn't have to be solar, you can run #6 UF underground 1/2 mile and still run most openers. As for visitors, they learn to call ahead, or call from the gate. Ours do....or they go home. :D

Totally agree with YOU Andy. Something tells me that this fella is just like lot coming on here now adays. If you are serious about privacy.......big if.....or just on here to run your mouth......Dogs are not by instinct going to bark and carry on unless trained, encouraged, or at least something pointed out to them in the beginning that something is going on and how to act...........But then again, the op says he knows how to train a dog........

Dead on about the MURS from Dakota Alert. Even their IR ones are dependable but to many falses if one doesn't take the interest to point them directly. The OP though points out that his high dollar alarm needs a battery..........Forget about advising about a true system if a battery can't even be maintained.....

A solar powered gate is the only way to keep out the random snoop or criminal looking for a place to earn their dope. Even then, if determined, a chain and a Toyota can easily defeat them.

Lots of good ideas from folks here. Some are from folks just like the op. On here, to rattle like an old truck on a dirt road. The problem is that that truck doesn't carry much of a load.............To the OP, I apologize for the strength of my disgust for folks that just need to see their words and dirt in print.............

That said, if on your way across my property the 1/2 mile to my home, and get through my electric gate, don't trigger the first MURS driveway alarm and the second to verify that your movement is not a fault. That means that perhaps you got missed by the game camSS at the gate and the first video camera triggered by the MURS. Oh, you decided to go across through the woods by foot, then for sure watch out for the solar powered flood lights that are triggered by your movement out there in the woods. You will find those also at the gate, by the little side road to the barn, up at the turn down the hill on the road, and those two out there as you enter the actual area around the front of the house.....Oh yes, those spot lights up there on the front porch pretty well cover that side as well as the two around in back.

Oh yes, mentioning dogs and training.......The two Anatolian shepards down in the pasture by the gate do love to carry on hoping that they get a critter to chew on in the pasture. Here lately they have started waiting, stalking, watching their prey as it gets just far enough from the fence into their territory so they can catch it before it makes it to the fence. Can you cover 200 yards in 8 seconds???......THEY CAN
The 3 Pyrenees spread out over the other pastures aren't quite as good of stalkers; but they do love to carry on.......Now you got up by the house and the 2 border collies and momma Anatolian yard dogs get a kick out of seeing who gets hold of the foot first as it emerges from the car door..........

Oh, did I mention that the 4 video cameras on the road and the 3 on a broad spectrum of visual alert have been watching, recording, and telling me to get my act in gear for the last minute or two.........While watching you do that, the decision is made that you have business here, so greet you with just the 9mm and the hideout on the ankle or do we get to use the 12 ga. pump backed up by the good old Garrand as you make your exit and were shooting at me so I had to protect myself at that range didn't I?????

So do I get irritated and annoyed when a doober comes on here that can't maintain a batter, to timid to go out and stop somebody turning around in his yard, and can't even train a dog to bark at strangers.............Sorry; but there are folks on here that have been watching this inadequacy develop over the last few years and are perhaps beginning to be vocal about it. When the WHSHTF don't come asking for what you should have been ready for.........God bless these United States.......Dennis

Go to Dakota Alert and talk with them or just do a search....This is what I am talking about above.......Search, heed the advice of other folks on here.....so many threads that you run out.....Did I say Search????...........The Dakota folks will help you, so does the sheriff, so does a talk with the parents of the boys.......All kinds of stuff.................Do a quick search on "Booby traps"....God bless.........Dennis

That's a pretty good speed...20% faster than Shakey Jakey.

I just ran a 3" super duct down my 1000 foot driveway. I have a # 10/3 copper electric supply and six pair communications cable. I was thinking about fiber but it's still too expensive. Not the fiber but the transcievers. Great for lightning though!

I use buried vehicle sensors. Two because they can determine direction of travel. A third, outside detects lightning and will prevent the buried sensors falsing with lightning. This stuff is made by Sure Action. I tried other systems, PIR and beams but got tired of the false alarms. You only make a mad dash for the gate in the middle of the night so many times before you get fed up. This system of course ONLY detects vehicles, not people.

Very nice! I hadn't heard of that breed before but I understand the perimeter patrol he does. There are a few other breeds that do the same thing. A friend of mine had a dog, I can't remember the breed, that did the same thing. She would make laps around the property all night long letting out a bark at the same points around the perimeter like clock work. Maybe someone else knows the breed, she was about 120 pounds, as big as a Saint Bernard and all white.
