Since everyone loves a new welder cart build, I figured I may as well put mine up. In my shop floor space is always at a premium, so whenever I build something it has to be as small as possible but still do what I need. Because of this, I wasn't going to find a commercially made cart that would be just what I wanted, so it was time to build one.

I knew I waned a drawer for small item and consumable storage, and I don't have a brake (yet), so I decided the easiest way to get one was to cannibalize an old metal desk. I was able to get one for nothing, but even if not, you can often find an old metal desk in your area on craigslist for anywhere between free and $50. Since it was a whole desk, I now have four more drawers and slides stuffed in the attic for the next bench/cart project. Once I had a drawer to build around, I was off to the races. The pieces I used were not always design choices, but what I had around, plus whatever I could scavenge.

Here's a selection of pieces off the racks along with some cannibalized pieces from the desk.

Top and bottom shelves.

Overall frame put together.

It rides like it's on wheels.

The desk gets put to good use - the top shelf and the drawer are set in place.

Formed up some bottle racks for the back and hacked up an old trailer wheel into some cable wraps. There's also a place to put a rod guard full of electrodes in the bottle rack support.

It's together and functional for now. I need to build a holder for the spool gun, and I need a pull handle for the front of it. I also want to get a couple of rod guards for tig filler and build a similar bracket to hold them on the back. Hopefully I'll find the time to disassemble it and paint it once I get the little details finished too.

Great job on the cart. I like the use of old stuff in it, nice thinking. Is that a Syncro180 on the bottom? I have one and enjoy using it. It seems to have a ton of power in DC stick mode.

it's actually an econotig. i bought it used this summer along with the 60cf argon bottle on the back of the cart. i have barely used it so far, but i've always wanted to spend some time getting the feel for tig, plus i wanted dc stick capability. it doesn't have any adjustments to speak of, and it only puts out 130a-165a, but that's enough for pretty much anything i need. very few of us need to weld thick stuff on a regular basis unless that's what you do for a living.

Nice job on the cart Lostcause.
I noted a couple of things though. First, aren't you afraid your Millermatic might slide off in those high speed turns??:D
I don't don't see the beverage holder on there yet. I must have missed that.

I certainly know how you feel about building something and putting it to immediate use before it can get a coat of paint......Been there, done that.

Nice to see you feathered your welds too.

Great job...

Nice job. I wish I had a scrap pile to work from. Well maybe when I retire and am home full time I can pick up some miscellaneous material to have on hand for tasks like yours. Again, great job.

funny thing you mentioned about it falling off. i had the same worries. right now gravity is working for me, but just in case the laws of physics take a day off, i'm planning on bolting it through the bottom of the welder to the top shelf.

i really do want to paint it soon because with the mix of rust, mill scale, white paint, two shades of green paint, and freshly sandblasted metal, it does look kind of bush league.

the desk and the wheel were the only true "scrap" pieces used. in the past i was able to buy steel at cost through a previous employer. i didn't want to trouble them with nickle and dime orders, so whenever i needed to buy steel for a project i would always order a bunch of extra material - particularly light angle and channel. it was pretty cheap to buy a bunch of stuff to have on hand. most of that was bought ten years ago at a cost of $0.15 to $0.25 a pound. tubes were expensive at $0.35 a pound :) when i have to buy steel now i cringe at the $0.75 to $1.25 per pound prices i get quoted. most of what i have has a slight coat of surface rust on it because i moved about three years ago and it spent a summer outdoors while i worked on a shop at the new place. it's all still new steel in random lengths, it just needs a little wire brushing or sanding before painting.

Very nice job on the cart. I know putting in the drawer was a bit of work because I did the same when I did my cart but It sure is handy to have that extra space.
You just can't buy them to match your shop so building them is the smart way to go. That will last you a lifetime. Good stuff
