Another Welder Cart

i looked back at 4shorts cart and it looks like we had the same thoughts -

I've went with heavy duty ball bearing sliders on a few projects now. One on the custom trailer I built and one on the Crazy Cart. It's a great feature that works flawless and very smooth but it's tricky to do but well worth the effort.

well, back to the drawing board... i had pretty much everything done except painting, btu when i finished welding the top on, it ended up being a little more wavy that i can live with. the pieces were slightly more than a tight fit to begin with, and then the heat from welding pushed it over the edge. i cut the old top out and i'm going to replace it with a piece of 14ga plate i have left over from a bench top.

i wanted to have it welded all around so that it had a good seal so dust, coffee, beer, or whatever couldn't seep down past and end up in the drawer. i think i may just tack weld it on this time and run a bead of caulking around the underside. i may pick up some small (3/4") tube or angle this weekend to have a consistent ledge for the metal to sit on... or, i may just shim it where i want it and tack it as i go. i found a toolbox top mat from an old craftsman toolbox that i'm going to cut to fit the top shelf too.

i also decided that i'm not happy with the rack i made for the spool gun, so that's going to be changed too. i think i may copy 4shorts cart slightly - where he used the pipe rails i may use some similar looking flat bar rails on the sides. i'm still not totally content with this either because even if i bolt the rails on, i would have to remove one whenever i need to load a new spool of wire. there's got to be a more elegant solution, though i can't come up with it yet.

i cut the old top out and built a support out of 3/4" square tube and put a piece of 14ga plate on the top. it's much more level than the previous top. i just plug welded the top this time to minimize any heat distortion.

a little paint, rubber top mat and toolbox drawer liner, and i't's finally done. certainly not an automotive quality finish, but it's better than rust and several colors of old paint.

After looking at these awesome carts I went to TSC for materials for my own. I just wanted to mention, that Tractor Supply has a sale on 8", and 13 " rubber wheels/tires. $5.00, and $8.00, till Feb 3rd. The two stores near me both had the same sale. Even if you're like me, and scavenge for your steel, and other useful parts, it is hard to find these bigger inflatable tires in the junk heap. I am going back today for more, just to have them....hmmm Gage wheels for my York rake? PS, the wheels even came with the bearings.

Have you seen any cheap prices on 4" casters. Harbor freight seems to have them all beat, but quite a ways to drive for me.

those are great deals. better grab them if you see them. i went before christmas in looking for the ones that they usually have on sale, and the shelf was empty. the guy punched them in and they were backordered to every store in the state at the time. i guess when they go on sale people buy them in volume and stock up for future projects.

i do too. i found that i keep ending up with more and more stacked up, so now i just pick one and go for it. after the essentials are done, work on that one project till it's finished. otherwise they all seem to end up in some half-finished state.

cable hangers. what did you make them out of and do others make different types. seems to be a never ending nusiance for me. something else to trip over.

I'd just make them out of flat bar and bend them into a L shape. Or, on my table, cut a piece of flat bar, and cut two 1 inch long blocks out of square tubing and welded them in to provide the center to wrap the cables around. I've seen a fair amount of old car rims as well.
