I caught this snake in my chicken coop today and am not sure what kind it is. I would like to positively identify him before I decide what to do with him.

He is about 4 feet long, round eyes, tapered tail. slightly triangular shaped head.

Pretty colors,,Personally, I would hold down his head and then pick him up.The head is not nearly triangle enough to be poisonous...But his name?? not sure, have to look closely at his pattern on the back.

Texas Rat Snake.
What your grandma would call a "chicken snake"

Good to have around, but they get long and big and scare the **** out of people scared of snakes.

Yes, I believe it is a Texas Rat Snake. They are abundant in our area. I have never heard of any Louisiana Pine snakes in this part of the state. I put him back in my chicken coop. He may get an egg now and then but he will surely keep the mouse population down.

I don't know what kind it is but I can tell from the picture it is non poisonous. See the scales on the underside near the tail are "double", split down the center? A poisonous snake will have full scales going from side to side all of its full length. Non poisonous will have split scales from the **** vent to the tip. Kingfish

 I have had quite a few Rat snakes and have never had one eat an egg, Bull snakes I had, would eat them as fast as they (eggs) get to room temp.! Glad you kept him around, chickens may "hold' it against ya though:laughing:

Good call leaving him there, he is not going to hurt a (full grown)chicken and he is a certified, been to the 40 hour training block, card carrying MOUSER.
