I was mowing a few acres of thick grass today and when I shut off the engine
I noticed the coolant in the overflow bottle was boiling. The over temp light did not come on. Was the engine overheating?

After the tractor cooled down I tried to restart it and the starter started smoking, I turned the key back off and the starter kept trying to turn over. ( This is the second time the starter has done this, I replaced the starter the first
time, but I guess that was not the underlying problem. Any ideas? Thanks alot!

Id check the sensor and light by turning key on and grounding the plug on the end of the sensor to see if the light comes on, if it does the light works but sensor may be bad? If its getting to hot and the heat transfers to the starter it can cause it not to work till it cools down, if starter is weak. I know you said u replaced it but i have seen it in ones when i worked in an auto parts store on replacements. There is a chance overflow was boiling and tractor was not deathly hot yet the cap allows radiator to be under pressure which raises the boiling point of fluid. When it heats and expands it forces the cap up and fluid into the resivior which at that point if hot enough will begin a boil, depending on the fluid concentration (antifreeze).

Member here, California has talked about replacement parts for these from parts stores like advace or autozone. Seems yanmar sourced parts from the same parts as some older datsun/nissan cars. You can do a search of his posts here on it or just pm him and he can give you the link to his threads. He goes as far as to tell you what works and what he has found like alternator and temp sensors and what applications (cars) they can be looked up as.

If your not aware California is a regular poster here and has a YM240. He may even post on this thread, he is a wealth of knowledge.

Sounds like temp light or sensor may not be working, The starter sounds like maybe a key switch bad or solenoid sticking. Ken Sweet

Did you replace the solenoid when you replaced the starter? How long did the starter turn over before the smoking occurred? Shouldn't turn one over more than about 10 seconds without giving it a rest. Heat could have played a factor in the starter sticking. Are you sure the water was boiling in the overflow bottle and not air bubbles coming in?

Did you replace the solenoid when you replaced the starter?

It wasn't a used Starter was it and not just new to you.A New or Remanufactured that would be replaced. The solenoid would be a good reason why. I have had them bad right out of the box before for cars. My guess Ignition switch or starter leaning more towards the Starter. Make sure all of the battery cables the ground to the tractor and starter connections are clean. Just had this out come to think about it may come in handy if you don't have it already.

Yes it had some bad cables, I am going to put new ones in and a new ing switch.
I just assumed it was boiling but i guess it may have been bubbles....If it was bubbles what does that mean. I cranked it today and ran it for about twenty minutes the engine sounded fine but the starter is still acting up.
Thanks a lot for everyones help.

   / ANOTHER YM2000 QUESTION #8
Bubbles when hot mwans bad head gasket. That is combustion gases that make it to the radiator escaping

   / ANOTHER YM2000 QUESTION #9
Were there bubbles today? Blown head gasket would most likely bubble hot or cold.

If it had a bad head gasket you would have either lost water, Over heated or water in the Oil esp. in the heat we have had the last few days. Never heard you mention anything about having to add water. I would drain and flush the Radiator sound like you may have a flow problem in it. when you shut it down that may have been a air pocket in it. Or actualy it may have been the water in your over flo getting sucked back into the radiator. After you refill the radiator and the over flo bottle (in between the lines) run it with the cap off to make sure it's full. When it's about to over flow most all of the air will be out of it and then put the cap back on it and then run it and check and watch how much water
goes in the over flo bottle. My bet just to the upper Hot line if that. By the way I run 75ant./25w. on the mix. Then when you use it again at least the next day before you crank it up check and top off the Radiator ;)

Good call I would replace the Battery cables and clean all you Starter connections  Is the Ign. switch that bad ?
