Every once in a while I am surprised to find something that works on a problem. Out here in the country we have a really bad problem with ants. They will find any crumb and immediately tell everyone about it and before you know it there is a party going on. If the cats leave any food in the bowl ... another party. Out of desperation I ordered this bowl it has several layers of circles, valley and hills in the base and it works...no ants. It's called a Bowzer Bowl.
Now if I could just make the same design for pier and beam construction.........

They also make the same douhnut shaped water bowels to go on the kitchen table legs. Are these fire ants? I feel sorry for you central/west TX folk because those pesky fire ants sure make life miserable. Camped out on Canyon lake once and within a half an hr had to unload the flat bed trailer and throw our bags ontop after being "overun". That was in '84 and i don't reckon that they have diminished since then. They also did a number on the dove population where we used to do well. Kinda figured that out when we noticed every square foot of ground contained 6-8 scouts. I think y'all should herd them up and ship them to all known Taliban strongholds......unleash Kato! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just saw a special on fire ants.
A woman was thrown from a horse (I think) right on top of a fire ant colony and couldn't move. When she was found it was touch and go with all the bites (or is it stings?) she had received.
As she lie in the hospital recovering she was complaining about the fire ants under the sheets. Everyone thought she was reliving her experience and then someone checked.... They found fire ants in her bedding! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

This was in TX and they were trying to introduce some tiny fly that will wipe out a colony by laying eggs inside host ants. Apparently one test site had flies that had survived and started a new generation. It was a pretty neat special and made me glad we don't have these ants up here.

Oh, sorry to ramble, any link or pic of the bowl?

We had a horrible problem with ants. They would come no matter how spotless we kept the kitchen.

I placed the cat feeding dishes in larger bowls filled with water. The ants did not cross the water to get to the inside feeding dish.

The ants are Argentine ants...the little dark brown ones sometimes known as sugar ants. We have many types of native ants and none of them find their way into the house.

I spent a lot of time on the WWW researching the problem. Now I control them with bait. It is very effective. The cure lasts for six months to a year. As time goes on I see fewer and fewer Argentine ant hills outside.

Mix borax with sugar and put it in a bowl. The ants take it back to the hive and the hive eventually disappears. I use one part borax and ten parts sugar. I put the borax in a blender to make it very fine and then mix the borax and powdered sugar in the blender. Stronger solutions don't work well as the ants won't take the bait.

You can get the borax in the laundry section at the market. It's called Twenty Mule Team Borax, a laundry booster.

I have used honey in lieu of sugar with equal success.

You need patients. It takes two or three months for them to disappear. But when they are gone they are gone. You can leave food on the counter and there will be no ants.

The only redeeming thing we've found about fire ants is my wife and I have both developed some significant immunity to their bites.

We're coming up on three years on our place, fire ant bites are NOTHING like they were the first year. The worst was, of course stepping on an ant hill. It wasn't uncommon to have 50-60 festering bites. I stepped on one the other day and came away with about three or four very minor bites (we wear sandals a lot).
