Anti-Freeze additive

Being a precision grinder we use something like a water soluble oil that prevents the ways on our machines from getting rusty. Along time ago (30yrs ago) I would help my dad with taking care of the cars. When I would flush out the radiators and re-fill them with anti-freeze there was always (what looked like another liquid) at the bottom of it. I would ask my dad what it was, and he would say it was a type of lubricant that helps lube the water pump. Being young I took his word for what he said.

Later on in years after getting my own fleet of constant fixer uppers, I would go thru the same routine and noticed that the funny looking stuff on the bottom wasent their anymore. So I called my dad, now working in the earospace division about it. All he said was they had taken it out because it made the parts that it lubricated last too long. So ever since that time I've been adding like 1/2 cup of this stuff I use at work. It comes from alot of places and it comes in many names all of which do much of the same thing. Every time I've had either to take my radiator out or top end of any off my cars (the older ones, I dont think I would take that on now, these new cars seemed to be boobi trapped with all the gizmos they have now) They've never had rust in them. They would always look as if new, same way for the radiator for that matter.

One thing is for certain, when I get my tractor due to arrive today (even though its a sunday) thats one of the things I'll do in the very near future. So if you folk want to give a try from someone who has, go ahead, there's nothing in it that will hurt the machine or plastic. Just find a machine shop and sweet talk them out of about 1/2 cup of this stuff and give it a try. It will change the color of the anti-freeze, but it sure has worked for me for years.

The only additive I would add would be to aid the wet-sleeves, an SCA. Other then that I use low/no silicate EG anti-freeze and it works wonderful.

As I was a machinist before being an engineer I do the "type" of stuff you are talking about. Does it work well for anti-rust, lube etc. sure for machine grinding, CNC, 5-axis machine; but, I do not know if I would add that stuff in a 15 to $20K tractor that you paid for. Also I would ask the manufacture before adding things to your coolant and see what they say before adding.

Could work good and prevent this but what about, seals, heat transfer, coolant drop-out, more materials it adds to collant, long-term wear etc.

Just something to think about.
