Just thought I'd share an idea a friend came up with as part of his anti theft deterrent for his ford tractor. His tractor is left out in the open and is very often parked up in very convenient locations for would be thieves to take it away or even idle teens to take it for a joy ride. His deterrent is to simply remove the steering wheel! He removed the standard nut thet holds the wheel hub to the steering shaft and made up a wing nut instead of the regular nut to make the wheel easy to remove.
He also has a secret switch hidden that prevents the starter from turning over.

The simplicity of this idea is awsome.

Sounds good, but I bet a 12" pipewrench will be all that's needed to steer that Ford anywhere.....BobG in VA

Most probable will just winch it onto a trailer anyway.

The best anti theft idea I ever saw belongs to a friend who owns a heavy equipment and trucking co. When he acquires a vehicle he has it adapted for an electric fuel pump then puts a kill switch on the pump. He had one truck stolen last year, the thieves started it and had just enough gas to get out of the yard and it died in the middle of the nearest intersection.

A professional thief would even have a spinner on that pipewrench.

Most thieves are lazy that is why they are thieves! The smart ones become lawyers!!!! :D:D:D

When the temps dropped below 0 when we were in the Milwaukee area crime dropped alot. There is a deputy here that told me there was a bunch of cabins broken into on the lakefront. The ones that were not broken into had rope across the driveway. They were too lazy to cut the rope, yes I said rope!

Disabled switches, outdoor lights, dogs, gates and ROPE!:D All go a long way.

As you say, "most". I've seen some work hard to steal something of little value. They'd be better of to go stand in the aircondition at Wal-Mart. And, before someone says Wally World would not hire them, don't count on it. They hire some real knuckle dragging thugs.

Oh don't get me started on customer service people that you have to explain things to twice, three times to. I have gotten to the point now if they can't comprehend conversation the first time I ask for someone else.

To get a job in customer service... you must use the words "green, pink and yellow" in a sentence...

"When the phone greens, you pink it up and say yellow"

Cheap Anti theft defense.....

I had a good friend that lived in the Bronx. He said he used this once living there. He had some shady guys approaching him from across the street and felt he was going to get mugged. He would approach the guys and ask for a buck. The guys walked back to the other side of the street.

Like it has been said , if they want to they could find a way. But being lazy they might pass also.
I have to leave the tractor at times and if someone came on it I would worry.
This was my idea.

If this is a ford with 2 steering arms.. then with a coat hanger I could have that tractor on my trailer in about a minute...

coathanger bypasses power for the ignition.. and the 2 steering arms you can use your heel on each side to steer... if no 2 arms.. then a vice grip will do it.. and I can buy a new wheel once I get my new free tractor home. ;)
