Anvil

I stumbled onto this the other day for $75. I've been looking for a good anvil for years, I think I did O.K.. I also bought the vise pictured for $20. I'm going to mount it on my welding table so I don't screw up my good Wilton vise.

Does anybody have an estimate on what the anvil itself weighs? It's 29" total length, 20 1/2" long on both flats, 17 3/4" on the top flat and 11 3/4" tall. And 5'' wide. It's mounted on a 8 X 8 X 7/8" piece of H- beam and a 16" diameter piece of 1 3/8" flat so it would be a little hard to weigh and deduct the pedestal, my bathroom scales don't go that high. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ok, you stole that anvil. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif My anvil is 27" long, 10 1/2"high and weighs 150#. I paid $150 for it about 9 years ago. If the face (top) is in good condition, it could be worth $2 per pound (not including the i-beam). Yours probably weighs in the 175 - 200 range. Any names or markings on the sides? My anvil pic is attached.

The one I use for shoeing is about that size and it weighs a little shy of 200 lbs. Some of those old anvils are worth a fortune. The one I have was given to me by my grandfather who got it from his father in the 1800's.

I buffed the side with a cup brush and found a stamped "224" and some barely visible cast lettering. Is that "224" the weight?

It also has square holes on either end that are around 3/4" deep that taper to a point.

I've thought about that but it gives me much more pleasure when I'm shoeing a horse and know that a fine line of men before me stood over that anvil and did the very same thing. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Gee, I feel bad now. My anvil is a small one I guess. I got it when my stepdad died, a few years ago. I remember it when I was a kid, it looked old then, so I don't really know where he got it from. He use it to shoe horses and mules. I had to go weigh it and it is only 4 inches wide, and weighs 144 lbs. So a little smaller than some I guess, but it is all I need. I didn't know they were in demand or worth anything. Of course I wouldn't sell it for any price, to many memorys.
