Hehehehe....
My Grandpa did a bit of that too[shock] He was in San Francisco during Prohibition, and made some $$$ brewing and running beer.

If you were to get one of Pappazian's "Joy of Homebrewing" books off Amazon.com; that'd be a good start.

I've drunk a lot of sweet apple cider in my life, but have only heard of hard cider; never seen or tasted any. Do they sell such in the liquor stores; I've never thought to ask.

Robert,

I have a bit differnt system for getting many kinds of interesting brews. My wife is a flight attendant and goes somewhere over seas once a week. She is good enough to bring back samples of the local brews for me to try. Keep asking for case quanities but, she tells me if I want to haul that kind of wieght I can come along./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I haven't brewed beer...... yet, but I've been brewing wine from kits for over a year now. I try to do most of my brewing over the winter and let it age for summer consumption. Love to sit on the deck and watch the sunset with a glass of wine. There's really not much to it with a kit except for bottling. Washing, sterilizing, corking and labeling take all the time. That's why I'm considering one of those Beer Machines if I am going to start brewing beer. Has anyone out there used one of these? http://www.beermachine.com/

I've seen hard cider in the stores around here. They are ok.

Thomas,
I've never tried to make wines. Everyone I know who does uses either grape concentrate(wine grape), or buys grape juice from a couple local wineries that sell it. They have made some impressive stuff.

Hope all is well out there and business booming.

Pat,
I tried one of those Beer Machines as a change from winemaking. If my kit was an example ... save your money and buy beer at the locl store! It was a fairly large investment for a cheap piece of plastic that leaked like a sieve. Huge, terrible, smelly mess!
And I was so looking forward to making my own brew!

I have a friend back in Alberta who is a real beer-brewin'-fool! He has 2 batches on the go all the time, loves to experiment, and keeps the result in a setup that includes an old fridge, several kegs and a CO2 system for pressurization. Has made some of the best beer I've ever sampled (and I'm real partial to some of the real (i.e. 8% ++) beers in Belgium and Holland!

too bad that common sense ain't
