I used to make "Hobo Coffee" just boil water in a pan and throw the grounds in on top of the boiling water, good stuff, then you can spend the rest of the day picking a few coffee grounds out of your teeth.

Reminds me of what my father used to drink. He called it horseshoe coffee. You fill a pot with water. Throw a few hands full of coffee in. Then put a horseshoe in. You know it’s done when the horseshoe floats. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Also, if any of you have compost piles. The coffee grounds are a very good green to add to it, so don’t throw them out.

My favorite author, the late Louis Lamour, called that coffee where you throw the grounds in with the water "cowboy coffee".

I love coffee, but can't stand caffeine. I've been drinking decaf coffee and tea for years. I drink about 10-12 cups of decaf daily, black.

At work, we get some from the coffee service in little packets thats really good. At home I drink Folgers - not quite as good, but I learned it keeps better in the fridge.

If i drank a cup at night I would be wide awake all night.

Once opened, packets of coffee should be frozen until use. No need to thaw them before brewing.

Freshly roasted coffee gives off CO2, so in order to be packaged fresh the packet needs some sort of one-way valve. Look for that valve if you want fresh coffee. Before canning, coffee must be completely staled lest the can bulge. And if your coffee comes "vacuum packed," like a brick, it's completely stale; the fresh stuff will puff out the package in no time at all. Most of the good stuff is packaged in an inert atmosphere (nitrogen), but this is lost the moment you break the seal. Freezing stops the staling process.

Thanks for all the information... As usual I am leaning stuff I never thought of reading this board. Great stuff.

Is it true that roasting on the spot improves the coffee that much?

If you sell green beans Pete I'll be glad to be a customer.

Hillbilly, it's been a few years since I just boiled water and coffee grounds in a campfire in an empty coffee can. In fact, the last time was on an overnight fishing trip on the New River in West Virginia. When the coffee's ready, if you just dump in what would amount to a big spoonful of cold water, most of the grounds will settle to the bottom./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

We drink so much coffee that I'm looking for a PTO driven grinder for my "babyBlue" tractor. Has anyone seen one yet?

I used to do a lot of backpacking with my dad out in the Sierras of Cal. We'd leave one car at Mt Whitney and drive the other to Yosemite, then hike back to the first one. Dad used to boil grounds in an old tin cup, then strain the gruel thru a sock. By the end of the trip he had no clean socks left and there was NO WAY I'd touch that coffee!!! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
