After reading the posts on the "Free Land Montana" thread got me wondering does any one on this forum live or have lived in some of these more isolated/remote areas of the US ?Alaska included. Just wondering if you would mind sharing your experiences, likes and dislikes of living in the true wilderness or vast spaces of the American West...plain states and Rocky Mountains etc. your way of life ..how far to the nearest store/town/neighbors ?? This type of living always intrigued me because of being the outdoors type.
Share some pictures of your place or land.

Recalling the words my daughter used to describe the place where we lived when she was growing up, we must have lived in that sort of environment! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

There was no mall with-in walking distance.

It had a (deplorable) gravel driveway.

The pizza delivery guy didn't come out this far from town.

And worst of all, there were COWS in our front yard.

I don't know how she lived through that terrible experience. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you have power provided to you, you are not remote enough. IMHO.

I consider desolate a place you'd have to build out your own infrastructure - power, water, septic, etc. etc.

There was one TBNer that was going to move off the Grid. His last post was in May. Here is a link to one of his post. Click Here
A saw a lot of desolate places on my trip out west last spring. No wires, No Satellite dishes. But lots of wood stacked up. They probably do not have time for TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The guy I refered to in the Montana post told me that you had to have a well(obviously) but also needed to suply your own power. Most folks did this by windmill in the plains because wind was free and frequently in the 30mph range, even in the winter... A generator was a possibility, but you needed to have a fuel source. It could be trucked out, but if you ran out, you could easily freeze...

As for stores, he tells me that the nearest grocery(of any kind) was 45min away from him. But he lived on the west side and was by no means concidered in the sticks when compared to the plains of East Montana..

I still think I would like this for a vacation, living there would be a comitment... You could say one should be commited to want this, but a cool idea none the less.

Yes, and somehow I doubt they would have high speed internet /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif or even a phone line of high enough quality to get more than 14K or so.

Satellite Internet service is available, even off the grid, if you have a way to generate electricity...
