RoPie,
There will be a bonding lug on the sockets for the ladders and handrails and diving board if applicable. Everything metal within 5' needs bonded as well. Attach a #8, or #6 if easier to aquire, to each lug and connect it to the mesh/rebar in the deck. Attach a wire from the mesh/rebar to the lug on the motor and heater, if any. Make sure each piece of the mesh/rebar is tied tight to the next one with the usual tie wires.
The idea behind all of that is make everything metal connected with the pool "the same".

Here is a link where you can download a free PDF covering the NEC Article 680 - Swimming Pools, Spas, Hot Tubs, Fountains, and Similar Installations from Mike Holt's fantastic NEC site. If you plan to do this yourself at least get all the info you can before you start.

RoPie,

I was in the same situation as you a couple of weeks ago. I am a licensed engineer and have designed and built many structures including doing plumbing and electrical work myself but this I felt was different due to the inclusion of water with electric and the pump, bonding, etc. No it is not difficult but it must meet the MINIMUM building code requirements and meet the needs of your equipment while keeping you and your family safe. The codes around here for pools have really cracked down and can be confusing even for the experts.

I decided to dig the trenches, set the posts, and generally act as a grunt/apprentice for an electrician that appreciated the help. My cost was $1700 for heavier wire runs and more (pump, lights, outlet, and heat pump). Run to distribution panel was over 100 feet. Distance to pool was 70' plus distance to pump around side, outlets on other side...

In essence I did all the time consuming work and saved a bundle while having a licensed electrician "do it right". I am very happy that I did it this way.
