BTW, the XBMC setup is really cool. They work like roku's and apple tv's put are open platforms. I use it to stream within my own network. I stream, movies I have bought, and music. There are picture apps to stream your pics from your Pc.

I rent from Amazon if the local video store doesn't have the movie I'm looking for.

We stream video to the TV via a BD player that has internet connectivity as well as a Win 7 PC that uses the 65 inch TV as a monitor. The PC works better in that it is easier to type in search strings with a keyboard compared to entering text with the BD remote. But we use both. We had to buy a new BD player because the old one was dying. The new one was less than $100 and has WiFi.

The kids stream to their game boxes, PC, Kindle, iPhone and iPod. We have 1.5 MB down so we have to "share" bandwidth from time to time but it works pretty well. Our DSL service stinks but that is a different issue. The kids are using Amazon, NetFlicks and YouTube.

Dan

Have been real happy with VUDU for temporarily renting movies and the few we have liked to purchase.. I do not know of any site that lets you download for ~$5 but many let you rent for that. however with that said a few that I have bought the family DL's them to their tablets and watches them on trips or flights

I guess that makes me question why they are so expensive to actual buy the download? Cutting out the hard material disc, transportation, logistics, store, etc. A download really dont cost them anything to let me do it??

I am sure they have smarter people than be deciding on a pricepoint. But it seems to me they are loosing customers. For under $100 per year, someone can use a good VPN and pirate all they want. THAT is really what they are competing with. And for $15+ per download, people are opting for the VPN/torrent. But if they sold the downloads for ~$5, it makes less sense to do the illegal thing. Save the VPN fees to buy 15-20 movies a year. Only difference is where that $100 per year goes. A VPN administrator? or the Movie industry.

I think most that pirate movies (and I have done a TON of reading), only do so cause there isnt a good affordable alternative like itunes did for music. And the people using VPN's and pirating would rather pay a few bucks a movie to the movie industry instead of a VPN. But again, that is just the tone I get from reading various other forums on the topic.

I agree with your point. Even the online rental is much more expensive then rental at Redbox. Redbox is what $1.50ish, but the online sites are usually $2.99 for old movies and over $5 for new stuff. When it comes to online video things are still getting figured out. From what I understand this is the first year you can legally stream the superbowl, and many other sporting events. The tech "experts" think that we are moving toward online viewing and the traditional cable tv will go away. We have been trying to cut the cable cord and just go with Roku, XBMC and Antenna. But the live sports makes it difficult.

BTW, XBMC was developed from the x-box media program. It was released to the open source market and has been worked on ever since.

Live sports and live NEWS is really all I need the TV for anyway.

Most shows that I watch, on history channel, science, discovery, etc can all be streamed. Even shows on local channels, and reality shows like duck dynasty can be streamed.

But there is certainly a bit of convince of being able to flip channels with the remote, and be watching 3 programs at once and toggling back and forth that would be a bit more difficult with streaming.

I have Dish Network, Blockbuster at Home, Roku and Netflix. I also use a Sling adapter on my DVR to watch anything I want on my laptop or smartphone. BUT ... by far ... probably the cheapest road to movies is via RedBox. They run about $1.30 per rental. If you want to watch them again, just download HD Decrypter from DVDFAB - it's free. Rip the movie to your computer and you can burn it to DVD or just watch it from your harddrive as much as you like :) Personally, after paying rental, I don't lose too much sleep about putting it on my computer.
