We're not going to be getting into N.C. much on this trip. But sneaking over to Cape Canaveral is on the list as we've never done that. Always looking for good eaterys, so we'll have to try to find the Chinese place. My wife wants to visit Celebration. I wasn't too enthused about it until she told me they have a golf course there and I could play that while she was doing her thing! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif And I have no worries that she'll find a lot of shopping places! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Thanks!

Don't think we haven't thought about visiting down under! One of my "mates" and his wife just visited you folks last year and just raved about their trip! It is definitely on our To Do list for later on! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

That's a nice tip, about Waukla Springs. We haven't figured out much about that part of the trip yet, other than the direction we'll be headed. We actually are only planning on stopping in Panama City becuase the drive to Gulf Shores is too much for one day. Maybe we'll check out Apalachicola a little closer! /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

I knew the TBN family would come through. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif Thanks guys. You've helped a lot!

GolfGar4,

Wow, you are going to stay in Madison. I learned to run a
tractor on the KY side of the river one long hot humid summer.
Some evenings the boss and I would get in the pickup and
head over to Madison to get a pizza. That was high living!

/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The farm fronted a good mile of the river and the farm house
was a few hundred yards off the Ohio river. You could tell
when the barges where getting close because the TV
reception would start to fuzz up. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Just down river they spent millions of dollars on the Marble
Hill nuke plant. They stopped building in the late 70s early
80s. I wonder what they ever did with it....

It sounds like Madison has changed quite a bit from the sleepy
little river town that I knew 20 some odd years ago. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Well, back to your vacation plans....

Wilmington, NC has the USS North Carolina. Its a great ship
to visit. I saw it one afternoon a few years ago and there
where only a 6 or so other people on the ship. But that is
out of your way. I think Charleston, SC has a WWII Carrier,
but that might be out of you way as well.

On the way to Orlando you will pass St. Augustine. If you can
spend a day there you should. The old fort and town is
interesting. How they built that fort out of stone still boggles
my mind.

When you travel from OTown to the Panhandle, take the back
roads. Central and North Florida is so different from the rest
of the state. Its very pretty country. There are springs
all over the state and you should see one if you have never
been to one before. I have forgotten the name of the spring,
but Ponce De Leon just popped into my head. It has an old
grist mill that has been turned into a pancake resturant. Kinda
hokey but its nice to stop by for breakfast. They have
griddles buried in the tables. The staff provides the bacon
and batter while you cook. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Its north of Orlando.

If you are in OTown go down 441 and go to GatorLand. I
can't count the number of times I have been there as a kid. I
was there a few years ago with some family and its changed
a bit but its pretty much the same. 441 on the other hand is
not the same. GatorLand used to be out in the middle of
nowhere and now its all built up around the place. See
GatorLand before it disappears. Its one of the last origional
tourist traps before the Mouse and Whale ruined central
Florida. Stay away from International Drive in Orlando. Unless
you like crowds, traffic, and cheap souviners. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Have fun....
Dan

I think the power plant is there. Don't know if it is a nuker, though. We stayed at the inn in Clifty Falls and you could see the cooling tower from the top of the bluff.

Dan,

Hey, thanks for the intersting tips! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I think Wilmington will be out of our way, but Charleston would be doable. I wonder which carrier is there? I almost got sent to the Wasp (helicopter carrier) when I was in the Navy, but then they got smart and discharged me! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

We've talked about stopping in St. Augustine, but wasn't sure if we really wanted to. I think you just convinced us to try! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

My wife's driven through the panhandle, but I never have. She said the same thing, that it's really pretty. Looking forward to seeing it. We'll have to see if we can find that old grist mill. Sounds like it would be fun cooking your breakfast that way! /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Hmmm....GatorLand. Got to say that's one that hadn't made our list of must things! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif We may just have to check it out, if for no other reason than to say we've been there!

Thanks for the ideas Dan. I think there are some real interesting ones there!

If you decide to stop in Asheville, NC, there is a great farmer's market just off the hiway....a side trip to Charleston is not far off of I95....it is a great southern town, well worth visiting...as is Savannah....great choice...that must have been your wife's idea./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif And, as I'm sure you know, Hilton Head Island boasts 24 eighteen hole golf courses within about a ten mile radius /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif....it is less than an hour's drive from Savannah...but then, that might make you drool and take even more time than stoppping at tractor dealers. You might also enjoy a side trip to Jekyll Isalnd in Georgia. Travel safe!

Hi Doug!

Say....I'm still wondering when you're going to get that signature of yours more representative of the kind of tractor you're driving?/w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yes, Savannah was the wifes's idea, but I'm looking forward to it too. I guess we're going to take the Haunted House tour?? My sister-in-law and her kids took it a while back and really enjoyed it.

Hilton Head.....Hmmmm...../w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gifdidn't realize that it was that close to Savannah......Hmmmmmm...../w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif 24 courses you say.....Hmmmmm...../w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif. Have to think on that one!!

I think she's been to Jekyll Island also, but I'll mention that to her too. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Thanks for the ideas. And I'll be looking forward to seeing your new signature!! /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Oh Boy! My favorite things!!/w3tcompact/icons/love.gif

<font color=blue>"Charleston, SC: Learn how the South won the war"</font color=blue>

That should be interesting. I must've studied the wrong books in school! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

<font color=blue>"Chatanooga: Go to the state aquarium."</font color=blue>

/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Sounds a little fishy to me! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif We hadn't talked about going to Chatanooga, but we certainly could. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thanks for the brief, but good, tips. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

well, i'm probably to late with this suggestion, but Mtn. View, Arkansas is having their annual bean feast and outhouse race this week end; plus that is the folk music capital of the world; plus you would catch some fall colors, and about 20 miles from there is Blanchard Springs Caverns; a living cave that has a pretty spectacular tour..you can't go wrong in that area.
