Anyone got any good uses for used mineral oil other than burning?

I got the stuff free, because I burn oil in the shop. And will mix it in with my used motor oil to burn.

But the stuff is clean. (out of a transformer). And has got me thinking about a possible good use other than heating? Perhaps diluting with a little thinner or acetone of penetrating oil??? Or using in a spray bottle for things like garage door rollers, door hinges, etc?? OR any other ideas??

A friend of mine who owns a mechanic shop drips used oil into his wood stove that he uses to heat his garages in the winter.

Silicone is a much cleaner lube for door hinges and rollers on garage doors. This is what is recommended by the garage door repair people. Mineral oil will collect dirt.

Good for oiling slate. Good for oiling wood cutting boards (if clean). Great laxative ;).

There is a good use (and often financially rewarding) for anything...if you've got enough of it...

Dripping oil in the wood stove is exactally how I burn oil. Just seems a waste to burn clean mineral oil.

According to google see below, but I would not use it anywhere near my food.:

Mineral oil is also great for cleaning and softening leather.I have used it on shoes ,purses, jackets & just about anything leather you can think of

After working on a greasy car engine; saturate your hands with mineral oil and wipe off with paper towels before washing hands with any kind of soap. Won't need to scrub so hard with harsh brushes/soaps.

Mineral oil is also useful for stopping creaking floor boards. Just trickle a small amount on the joint and hey presto.

Similar to with decks, mineral oil is good for butcher blocks. I have restored them by merely slathering on mineral oil (not adulterated mineral oil, like baby oil). After soaking for a few days, all the separations between pieces and cracks from drying disappeared.

For those of you interested in treating your furniture with lemon oil products, be aware the "lemon oil" products you purchase downtown are just mineral oil with a lemon scent. Using straight mineral oil will give you the same effect.

I've read that mineral oil is a non-conductive liquid. Because of this unique property I've seen people who have literally dropped a computer into a fish tank filled with mineral oil. Allegedly they work great, it's like poor man's liquid cooling.

Another use: Remove temporary tattoos from skin.

Mineral oil is also very good for cleaning silicone "toys" and silicone hoses on your car.

A little less common use for mineral oil is it's perfect for storing sodium or potassium as long as you make sure it's pure mineral oil (no perfumes)

you can use mineral oil to clean a stainless steel fridge, it gets rid of the finger prints and a little goes a long way- so just use a dimes worth- put on with a soft cloth and buff up with another soft clean cloth

Good stuff. Thanks.

Not sure what I will do yet. I guess I forgot to mention that we are talking about 25 gallons too.

I will probably burn all my oil first and leave this for last. By then, I may have use some for other things. I might see how it does on my shoes/boots. Where I normally use Vaseline

I'd keep it quiet if it was me. I had a chance to take 500 gallons from a local college transformer being replaced. The contractor doing the job just wanted the oil gone. They called me knowing I burn waste oil. I figured best not to take it because even though I accept small amounts of waste oil to burn it is illegal in our state to accept anyone's oil without first testing it for chlorinated solvents. The paper trail would have led to me directly.

Also the question persists what about PCBs?
Good luck I would just want the stuff GONE up the chimney if it was my choice, sooner the better.

Good read here scroll down to PCBs:

I use mineral oil on all the spoons I make. I also make something called spoon butter which is pure beeswax and mineral oil melted together in a double boiler. It covers and shines nicely.
