I was once asked by someone was going to an public auction of equipment what they should know and what
they need to be aware of

Gary--We also get those type questions and my reply to them, is to stay 1 bid ahead of me and you will be OK--Because I am buying to resell and you can pay a little closer to retail and still be alright in your purchase--Ken Sweet

Stick to your price is the best advise, I've walked away from auctions with a few small things, and $4000 in cash. Somebody else wanted everything I wanted, more than I did. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

An afternoon of asking around my local equipment rental yards yielded a well used but affordable Kubota BL52C tiller.

I spent an afternoon fixing a sheared chain tensioner bolt, tack welding a few holes/pulled bolts or two and new lubricants.

Yield: A nicely refreshed, very usable tiller for $400 plus $50 in oil, bolts, and a few cans of kubota orange paint. I'll need tines within a year, but it's still a heck of deal, at least around here in California.

Another yard offered up a few large but beaten JD rotary's for $200 ea. but they were too thrashed for me to even consider dealing with them.

Good luck!

Another good hint! THANKS! My wife has given me most of the day off, so I might be able to do that today. :)) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

My best source for deals is the Thrifty Nickel paper. http://www.thriftynickelads.com

I just bought a 5' disk harrow in perfect condition for $295. I look in my surrounding area and I've been looking for about 6 weeks until the right one came along. I also found a 24 inch culvert 40 feet long that I needed in brand new condition for $300.

I check it every Thursday morning online with a keyword search.

I also keep my eye on ebay, but some of the prices get way out of control. A Vermeer trencher worth about $2,500 went for $3,500 in the last minutes of auction. Crazy!

Good Luck,
Eddie
