Any Klipsch fans here?

Many years ago I used to sell Klipsch speakers along with Carver and Adcom equipment. I did like the sound of the Klipsch horns, the thing I didn't like was the size of those, looked like a small VW bug.

In any case, back to your original question. I recently built my current house and I have installed a multitude of Klipsch speakers in wall and ceiling. I am using RCR or RCW series (Reference), which have been discontinued but there are current models out there. I purchased a lot of them from ubid for about $190/pair and they are a good price, considering they cost about $400/pair for a current model. They can be painted and blend in with the walls.

As they use the same type of drivers as your Horns/Lascalla's, etc...(horn tweeter), they are usually a pretty good match, especially if you are uisng them for HT type of install. The challange will be finding a center channel that is matched to your fronts, not sure which one that would be, but make that your mission to find out, you can even contact Klipsch and ask for their recommendation. A big difference in sound is finding speakers that work well together, not just buying the best of breed, you want a sound that is in harmony with each other.

I have been down that road and was really impressed with my last HT setup, Klipsch KSP-400's (front), KSP-C6 (center), KSP-S6 (dipole side speakers) and KSW-3 (inwall) rear for a 7.1 system. The front speakers had 15" subs in each speaker and really put out the bass, however, when I sold the house, the new owners purchased all the HT equipment and I got to go shopping again. :D

As previously mentioned speaker sound is very subjective and 5 people cound't agree on on the same speaker if their life depended on it (ok, I am exaggerating a little, but you get the point).

Good luck in your quest, and remember this is supposed to be fun, however, if you want to emphasize your Horns, try inwalls to complement them as they will only be used when watching movies, generally not when listening to music.

Hope my 2 cents help a little.

I still have my Phase Linear amp and pre-amp with the auto correlator..........I used to have it hooked up to some Marantz 44" tower speakers, very clean sound............

I almost bought klipschs about 12 years ago, they were the only ones still using real wood veneer, I ended up with definitive technolgy bipolar towers. have been so happy with them.

There are many companies using real wood veneers. Paradigm, KEF, Sonus Faber, etc., to name just a few.

I purchased 2 pair of Klipsch KG 400 speakers in 1985 for $2000.00. I replaced 1 tweeter around 13 years ago. They are oil rubbed oak with brown tweed grills. Back then, they blew away the Boes 901 speakers in a side by side comparison. The store didn't sell Boes products, but he had them there so people could compare them to the Klipsch. After 20 years they still don't look outdated.

Just goes to illustrate different folk's experiences. My only encounter with Klipsch was bad.......very bad.....filled the house with smoke smelling like burning tar bad. Returned, repaired and fried again in 90 days bad. It's been many years and I really do not remember the model numbers, but I do remember the smell. Glad to hear some folks have gotten good service.

They've long since gone to the dump and I've become a Bose / Polk guy.

Now I am not an raging "audiophile", you know the kind that spends $300 for a 6' speaker cable, but, I know what I like and what sounds good to me. My budget forces me to be reasonable :D

When we were building our house and I was designing our home theater system, I was strongly considering Klipsch. Thought Bose first, then backed off that. To me Klipsch had the best subs - right up there with the Velodyne's, but, I thought the Klipsch had more punch. Wound up going with the Klipsch 15 sub - took forever to find one as Klipsch had stopped making the model I wanted - they took the model I wanted which was solid wood, no particle board which I feel gave it the tight puchy response, added a cherry veneer and $300. The previous model was just as good and half the price.

The upper end Klipch's had the best back surrond speakers I heard for under a $1K. Those things would put most front mains to shame.

I am a huge Onkyo fan, still have the first receiver I ever bought back in '84. Was top of the line at the time with 300 watts stereo and she still sounds great. Use it my home studio. After listening to various setups with an Onkyo 601, my NEW receiver of choice, the Polk's really sounded the best with that receiver. Add in the Klipsch sub, and it totally rocked. At the time, the upper end Polk's had the best sounding and clearest center channel IMO for under $500, so I built around that. Got the predecessor to the new RTI 10's and the back wedge surrounds. Overall I am very happy with the setup.

These things are incredible! Have you heard them?

I heard them when they were made by a small private company, then Polk bought the company. I thought they might get wrecked as Polk was moving more into the chain stores, but, Polk made them better! Absolutely incredible. No need for a dedicated sub - very tight bass and no muddiness. If money were not an object, this is what we be sitting on each side of the big screen. If you haven't heard these and are into good sound, you need to find them and take a listen. Be prepared though, you will hate your mains when you go back home. Fortunately, I heard them a while back and am over them now, I think.

I can rememeber my high school Calculus teacher talkng about his Klipsch speakers and that was 35 years ago so they have been around a while.

I have some Elctro Voice Interface C's that I bought 29 years ago because I could get an employee discount. I still like them. They are still cranking out the music.

You're preaching to the choir!!! I've got a pair of their Interface "D"s that I bought new in 1979.

They're looking a bit beat now after all my moves and need a new surround on the woofer. Seems those rot out every 10 years.

Regarding Klipsch being around for a while, the Klipschorn is in it's 60th consecutive year of production. They're making the 60th Anniversary unit's right now. I saw some new ones about 3 weeks ago when I visited the factory. The Khorn is the longest running speaker made.

Audio is my first love :)
Right now I run a Denon pre-amp / Adcom Amps, and custom build HiVi-Research monitors and Titanic subs. I love ribbon tweeters. In my office is another set of HiVi monitors, the basment has a large set of Vifa/ScanSpeak MTM's. I've built all these myself and designed and tweaked the crossovers. www.partsexpress.com is like a drug for me. I also built my own amplifiers about 3-4 years ago, but I sold those. They sounded awesome, but I was always nervus that it was going to blow up on me at any time so I sold it. I worked in pro-audio when I was in college. During that time I built a set of PA Mid-Highs and 2 pair of subs, then a PA sub for my college appartment. The design was dubbed the housewrecker, it was a 1/4 wave bandpass box with a 15" driver. It would fill a basketball court with bass, imagine it in an appartment.

Just so happens I have a pair of late '70's vintage (serial numbers upon request) La Scala's. Without a doubt, they are "block (party) speakers". Mine are electrically flawless and, I would rate them as "very very good" cosmetically, though not absolutely "mint". They are for sale for $500.00 FOB 93675. See attachment for general view. Detail pix/mpeg w/sound upon request. If you know these speakers, you will understand "they need an owner that can appreciate thier full potential". I have experienced it. It's like an old (50) man like me trying to satisfy a young woman more than 3 times in an evening ... they (the speakers) just keeping wanting more musical food. Sorry, you have to know OLD Klipsch to get it ...
