Dad always told me the quickest way to start an argument was to bring up politics or religion. I think he left out lube choice. That seems to be a hot button w/ a lot of folks.

I work for the fleet department for a local county government and we sample all the compartments of heavy equipment at every service. We have caught many minor problems before they turned in to larger problems. I do not have enough hours on my tractor yet to service it but I will sample all compartments when I do the first service. Cheap $25 insurance.

I have a 1978 Kubota B7100 and a 1997 Dodge 2500 with a Cummins. I get my oil tested at Blackstone yearly on each one. On the Cummins I found out that my oil filter had gone to bypass and the air filter was letting dirt through. A lot of people with diesel pickups test their's.

Snoboy,

I send the tractor and truck oil off to Blackstone. The JD oil has only gone a couple times. The truck I send if I let the oil go longer than I have in the past. The last oil change on the truck was well around or under the milage I changed last time so I did not send out to be tested. I have run the oil to about 8,000 miles I think and Blackstone said to go to 10,000 and see what happens.

I don't want to go that high but at least I know it possible on the oil. I am using Shell 5w40 in the truck and the last oil change the tractor got the same oil.

I will send the tractor oil to be sampled again.

Later,
Dan

The way you guys are using oil analysis is really the way to do it. It doesn't have to get technical and way in depth. If your oil is doing it's job that's great. If you change at 5k, 7500k, 10k, etc. you just need an oil that will perform to your standards. Getting an oil that is still up on all standards does a person no good if they are just draining it out. Way too many times these discussions go south because they get into what could be better instead of just what works in your situation.
