Any one have there own saw mill ?

I have some pretty ambitious plans for a barn, equipment shed, and various other structures. I also prefer the old timey look of wood structures. AND I happen to have 8 to 10 acres of pines 8 to 16 inches in diameter I want to get rid of and turn to meadow. So, I got to thinking why not cut and mill my own lumber. If you have done anything like this, I would like to here about it. I have been researching home type band saw mills, and think I might have a good idea here. Any two cents will be welcomed. Thanks.

Look at the chain saw type if it is a small project. Northern Tool has them. I know a guy who built a log cabin using one.

Be forewarned that if you go the chainsaw route, it is very slow, and very hard on the saw. I have one and would love to upgrade to a bandsaw mill. Even the cheap one from harbor freight would be better than my Alaskan mill.

There are some threads here if you use the search function and tons on arboristsite.com. Lots of good information there, but they aren't always as friendly as we are.

I agree with BigE I have an Alaska chainsaw mill, and it is slow. For the wood needed for a barn, I think a band saw mill would pay for itself. And then after the barn is built, do some custom sawing to make a few bucks.

Just curious...Can you build with green wood, or would you have to let it air dry for a year or two, or maybe build a solar Kiln?

I have built with green wood- no problem. The boards are heavier to move and spit sap if you hammer in a 20 penny nail. I like using green wood. Remember though- it shrinks. Those tight fitting boards will pull away as much as a full 1/4 inch from each other. Board and batten works well. I've routed my own ship lap with a v groove. All great stuff to use. Some people are scared of green wood- does fine.
