any one use pet insurance?

I cover some of my high-$ horses with "health insurance" to cover colic surgery and "loss of use" life insurance, but I sure don't have it on all of them. It's an economic thing. I know it sounds heartless, but I wouldn't even consider it for a cat or dog. Just because you CAN keep an animal alive, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

We had 2 of our dogs covered for 3 years, at $89 a year we had one big Vet bill over $ 2,500 they covered just under $ 700 of the bill. They covered small things like office calls but very little if the vet cost $ 45 they covered like $ 8
We do not cover the dogs anymore the rates went up to over $ 115 a year, that was more than we wanted to spend

I was more concerned with the high dollar items than the normal, routine stuff.. Our cat got sick the other year, but after $1500 (and paying $23 for a enema when i can barely pet him at times, was a GOOD return on the money LOL) at the vet he is good as ever now.. My wife had the cat for over 12 yrs at the time..

Its is this sort of $1500 expense I would like help with it it happened..

thanks for all the feedback..

Sometimes insurance companies (i.e. Geico, Progressive) that insure you over the phone will give you an INITIAL quote, which sounds pretty good. But then they'll look up your record and that quote will change. So be sure the prices you're getting are the exact price you're paying when you sign on that dotted line. Another smart way is to get a quote from insurance brokers like Affordable Insurance Online | FREE Quotes Save Money on Auto, Car, Business, Health, Group, Homeowners, Renters, Life insurance. They can surely help you decide which insurance company is best for your insurance needs.

Do these companies, such as the ones you mentioned, Geico, Progressive, etc sell pet health insurance? Isn't it a little difficult to look up the health record of a dog or cat? I wouldn't even know where to start to look for the health record of anyones animal unless they told me who their veterinarian is. Then comes the confidentiality issues. I know that the local veterinarians won't even tell you who the owner of a loose dog is if you give them the rabies vaccination record number. The best that they will do is to contact the owner to tell them to contact you.
