I bought a Kubota L48 with a loan from Carvers back in North Carolina or was it South, either way, I got away with no sales tax for about 1 year, thats when the franchise tax board sent me a letter informing me I owed tax. The year was 2001. I came up with my price because I did get to deduct not the shipping cost but the "packaging" cost. The packaging was very expensive.

Interesting. Did you deduct the cost of your tractor as a biz expense on
a tax return? My understanding is that if you buy ANY capital equipment and
don't have a record of paying sales or "use" tax on it, the CA Franchise Tax
board will come after you since they know about it. If you buy anything
out of state, you do owe CA "use" tax. It could be that book puchased from
Amazon.com or that tractor from OR. You can volunteer to pay it, but I
doubt that there will be any enforcement if the state knows nothing of it,
as they won't if it is not reported.

I visited several Kubota dealers in OR in 2004 and L3130GSTs w/ the 723
loader ran mid $17K and $500-1K more for HST. That was in Tangent
and Rickreall. Some of the quotations on this thread are amazingly
low, given that it is 2 y later. Maybe they ARE clearing out the Grand L
30s before the Grand L 40s are in......

Ask your dealer about the CA agriculture tax exemption. It might work for you. Look it up on the net.

My understanding is the AG use exemption reduces the sales tax to
2 or 2.5%. But that is 2nd-hand info. Maybe someone in CA who has
used it will post here.

And... you better have sufficient documentation, one thing government entities get good grades on are determining and collecting taxes, they make up for it on services.

I trashed my old ancient computer and, started over with a new one! Just wondered if you ever contacted Tony at Dolk Tractor in Rio Vista about a Kubota, or was there a better deal elsewhere?-----LEE

TBN member Ultrarunner lives in CA and bought in OR. I don't remember which dealer, though I may have it in an e-mail on my old computer out in the garage. I do know he got a BX-23 for $14,999.

If you buy in OR and finance through Kubota, they do notify your state of residency, and thus someone in CA would get a tax notice from the Franchise Tax Board. If you pay cash or arrange your own financing, Kubota does not notify them.

This has been discussed here many times before. Some super straight arrows believe that if the state wants money from you, you should hand it over. Others believe the Boston Tea Party proves it is your duty as an American to avoid taxes any way you can. My personal take on this one is that it is a grey area. When I go to OR on vacation, I do clothes shopping at the outlet malls along I-5 and pay no tax. When I get back, I don't call or write the F.T.B. and ask how much tax they'd like me to donate to CA. When I buy things online from other states and pay no tax, the F.T.B. would accept any tax I voluntarily wanted to contribute, but they don't ask and I don't tell. A BX is small enough not to require registration in CA. It's personal property, not a vehicle, not real property (as in real estate). If I were to buy a tractor in OR and haul it back to CA, I would do nothing no differently than when I buy clothes in OR and bring them back here. I'd put it in the back of a U-Haul truck and at the state line they'd ask me whether I have any fresh fruit, veggies, or live plants. I'd say "no" and drive on home. If you were really worried about it, you could drive the U-Haul from OR to NV, then turn west on I-80 from Reno to Truckee. At Truckee, turn off onto the old highway going over Donner Pass (not Donner Summit) and avoid inspection stations altogether. (Someone told me the inspection station on I-80 in Truckee is permanently closed anyway.)
