Congratulations! That is quite an accomplishment!

I have 1,100 hours of pilot in command time in a Cessna 182 (with retractable gear.) Just for fun one year, my wife and I flew it to the Arctic Circle and back. It is a great airplane that will serve you well.

Congrats on SEL rating.

Good morning fellow pilots.....ad me to the list of Private Pilot now. Got my ticket October 4th! It is as great as you said it would be!
Way to go Red, enjoy your flights. It is so much fun to fly. I once landed at Russellville KY, nice airport.

For anybody with young kids in their life there is a kids book on Amazon called “The Magic of Flying With Grandpa”. A good story about two kids on a sightseeing venture with grandpa in a Cessna aircraft. Fun story, kids seem to like it.

That (Russellville) is very close to where I trained and actually did all of my night training out of there. My primary training site couldn't do night because it is grass with no lights. Learned on grass, glad I did!

Also learned on a grass field, actually it was a tractor road in a hay field.
My 1st AC was a Piper J3 and that field suited it just fine.
1st instructor was a former bush pilot and he taught me all sorts of cool tricks that served me well later.

J3 was great fun but terribly slow, I upgraded when I found driving would get me there faster.
Next was a Luscombe, another Luscombe then a Cessna 170B which I straight traded for a Cessna nice 182 (182 owner wanted floats and my B was seaplane ready.)

CONGRATS, Old Red!! I got my ticket on March 18, 2001. Unfortunately, due to a lot of reasons, I haven't flown since October of 2008.

I started my training at a municipally owned 5000' airport. Finished up at a family owned 2300' grass strip. Did my night training over at the municipal airport, but landed back AT NIGHT at the grass strip. They put 4 kerosene lanterns at the threshold and then another 3 or 4 lanterns spaced along each side of the runway. That was pretty wild, landing like that!!

Been a while since I started this thread but I want to keep it going...it was a great thread for me with lots of participation from many pilots on TBN.

I have right at 175 hours now and finished my check ride in October. I bought that 50 year old 182 that you can see earlier in this thread. I flew her many places. We went to Disney World over Thanksgiving, the Great Smokie Mountains several times, UK football and basketball games. It was great fun. But this plane was lacking in something I wanted very badly. And that was to go fast. So fast forward to March 5th 2019 and I flew this new to me bird home! I sold the 182 for what I paid for it and now have this little gem. This little guy will take us to the panhandle for a weekend trip in like a little over 2 hours...we did this Saturday. He also took me back to Disney over spring break. Anyway, lots of adventures and my tractors and farm are getting jealous because I have been spending so much time flying.

Have my first instrument lesson tomorrow. 2019-02-28 11.12.53.jpg

Unless it's a turbo, isn't the Cirrus only about 10 knots faster than the 182??

From the link that Moss provided, the SR22 has a max cruise of 183 KTAS. I Googled the cruise speed of a 182 and found 167 mph which works out to 145 knots. So, 38 knots (44 mph) faster in the Cirrus.

Plus, doesn't the Cirrus have the emergency chute? Flying with the family in IFR conditions, that would be a plus. Not sure if the Cirrus has the payload of the 182 or not. But, the Cirrus definitely has the "Cool Factor".

CONGRATS OLD RED!! That's pretty cool!! You've definitely been bitten by the flying bug.

My normally aspirated SR22 is WAY faster than my Normally Aspirated 182. The useful load between my two planes is close to the same. But I do have air-conditioning in my cirrus which takes away from the useful load, along with a parachute which also takes away from the useful load. But for my family of 3 it is perfect...and did I mention fast? The cirrus have a very slick/clean airframe. No rivets, carbon fiber frame not to mention it has 310 horsepower and my 182 had 230. Don't get me wrong, the 182 is one **** of a plane. I loved it, and it does just about everything really well. Great all around plane the 182 is for sure.

Pilot here also.
Flew many hours on a C182F, a 24 volt ex military bird. It was the first model with the slant tail and had rear window.
I upgraded it to IFR capabilities (it not me), ADF, DME VOR/ILS and adapted a single axis AP and Cleveland stoppers.
With long range tanks I could fly from my home base (YUL) to Miami if my bladder could have taken it.

Flew that bird south many times as well as across Canada.
Gotta admit I sure miss flying, kinda gets in your blood but at 80 those days are past, besides fuel costs are deciding factor as is maintenance.
I recall AWD's like fuel cells, mandatory 5 year prop OH's all being contributing factors to my selling.

Over my aviating years I owned some 13 A/C ranging from a J3 cub onto the 182.
Being an ULM/ A&P did help with my hobby.
I unfortunately let all my licenses lapse so that era is history.
LOL, I replaced that hobby with tractoring and retirement.
Lots of good memories.

I have a lot of respect for you pilots from back in the day. With the tools we have available to us know with a simple iPhone or iPad and what they add to the cockpit is simply incredible. I had to learn pilotage and dead reckoning with paper charts and what not but after being spoiled with my digital charts, glass panel and this crazy digital autopilot.....Well you catch my drift. The in flight weather we have at our fingertips is my favorite thing.

Flying in to a new airport and you can't see the **** thing...but you know it is there cause your screen tells you so!! Coming in to new airports on paper charts and looking so hard for them trying to find them out there was always so stressful to me as a student.

Been flying in Alaska for about 40 years. Had the same bird for most of it. When I started out almost all of the place was uncontrolled airspace. Now almost all of the interior is MOA's and restricted areas. Map and compass was very important as VOR's were few and far between. Used the ADF a lot too. Mostly used common sense! Now a tablet gets me everywhere! Still carry all the other stuff though. Remember, gadgets can fail and will do so at the most inopportune time!

What did you fly up there? I watch a youtube channel called Fly8MA. It is this young couple...acutally about an X airline pilot met this girl from up in Alaska. She's the coolest chick I think I've seen. She's cute, a bush pilot, owns a bar, and is just cool laid back woman who loves to fly her "Little Delta" she calls it. It is a Cessna 170 with the big bush tires on it. They flew all over Alaska and had some of the most amazing footage I've seen in my life. So remote and beautiful territory. These little 4K go pro cameras they strap on their planes these days is simply incredible. So anyway, what did you fly up there? You Alaskan bush pilots are in a league of your own. Incredible..even today things are very space up there with no ADS-B weather and the like!

Ah, sweet memories, CESSNA 170, I had a B version which was virtually a C172 with the 3rd wheel in the correct position.
Flew a great many hours on that bird and took it just about everywhere.
The 170 sired a whole generation of descendants, like 172, 180, 182, etc etc.
What many folks don't realize is that a whole series of their parts are common.

My 170 was updated nicely as I used late model seats, ram's horn control wheels, drooped wing tips and cleveland stoppers.
Many folks re power using a Lycoming.
As to AWD's the 170 family probably has the least number out there making it economical to own.

I plan to buy a taildragger of some sort this year maybe next. I like the 180 as well but might be a little heavy. The guy in the hangar in front of me has a Kit Fox that looks really neat. Take the doors off and what not. My instructor uses his 180 as a cross country family hauler as well as a play around low and slow STOL plane. They look fun and am excited to get my endorsement when I get finished with the instruments thing...

Very pricey airplane, and comes with it's own parachute as well.
