Any Snake Experts Out There?

Now being from So.La. I have spent my time in a pirogue. Hence, the ByuBill. I just never in a life time thought that I would see a discussion about pierogies on a tractor site./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif We get quite a few foreign exchange students from Europe. The ones from Poland always have pierogies around. They stuff them with all sorts of things. Even strawberry jam for breakfast. Mostly meats and cabbage ect./w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif Sorry guys, I've gotta go find something to eat. This is making me hungry.

It's a Hognose snake. Perfectly harmless. Known for its antics of hissing and flatening its neck like a cobra when confronted. It will smometimes even play dead. But it will not bite. Hognose snakes live on a diet of mostly toads....one of the few animals that are immune to the poison in a toad's skin. Just leave him alone and be glad that you have such interesting creatures sharing your property.

All snakes will bite if you irritate them enough. I picked up a Garter snake once because my mother was having a fit about it being in her garden. It bit the crap out of my thumb and those sharp little teeth drew blood. His plan was to make me let go.......and it worked.

Not sure about the color but I'd guess a corn snake (Probably not the proper name). Have two in my barn - can get to 6' and are great for policing the rodents. Ours looks very similar and has distinct orange color. Is that orange?

The snake you photographed is what I was taught was the Common Kingsnake. ( I worked at the San Antonio Zoo in the reptile house at the time, 1971) They are sometimes refered to by other names, puff adder, and a few others. It will bite. It is not poisonous. It does kill rodents, rattle snakes, and coral snakes. It is probably one of the most benificial snakes in North America.

There are several varities of Kingsnakes. The Scarlet Kingsnakes and Sonoran or California Kingsnakes have distint bands around their bodies. The Sonoran or California has dark brown and cream to yellow coloration. The Scarlet has dark brown, red, and cream to yellow bands, it is sometimes confused with the coral snake.

Amazing ain't it. I'd actually stopped reading this post when I thought readers had zero'd in on the type of critter it was. The topics do wander off.

Last year I posted a question about an apple tree we've got - - I've never been around apple trees & plain didn't know they would produce in SE Louisiana. Well I got the answers I was after, but the thread soon turned to catapaults & spudguns. Quite a bit more interesting than my mundane question.

I can only say that either my memory is not so good, or my boss at the San Antonio Zoo back in 1971 misinformed me as to what varity of snake that was. We had a gentelman bring one to the Zoo that he had found in his back yard. He thought it may be an uncommon snake since he had never seen one like it before. I know they bite because I reached into the trash can, that the man brought it in, and got bit while I picked the snake up. No big deal just picked up the snake and carried it to the reptile house.

To bad they didn't have a better picture of the Western Hognose snake on that website. I think that is, in fact, the snake in question, after reviewing the link you provided.

I was right about one thing though, "A has been overgrown drip" seems to be appropriate.

Don't know if you settled on an answer but this is definately a hognose. They will hiss, flatten their heads and even strike a few times (mouth closed). They are harmless but scary looking. Quite the imprssive show.

You GOT IT Hognose no doubt about it. They come in lots of colors. I like the pure black Hognose snake. They are great snakes and once you get them in your hands they settle down and are quite friendly and make good pets. If you have lot's of toads around you can feed them and they eat well in captivity. They will eat about all the toads you can feed them. Very freindly and easy to care for. Great Snake!
