Any suggestions on my new Gate Plan.

LakeRat1 I like your idea, but I think I'd try to incorporate a thrust bearing at the bottom.

I've never built a gate but could you take something like 1" or 1 1/4" solid rod for the hinge pin? Maybe take some 1/4" or thicker plate, cut one end curved to match the post and drill a hole the size of the rod on the other end. You could even make the plate in two pieces with slots in it to adjust the gate. You could weld a section of pipe, say 8" long between two pices of the plate and weld the rod onto the gate. You could even choose an inner pipe diameter that would allow you to use bronze bushings.

If you weld the rod to the gate on the top only you could make it so (with the help of several friends or a tractor) you could just slide it into the pipe. If you ever needed to you could remove the gate.

One thing I would do for sure is make a saddle to support the gate when close and maybe open. Last thing you need is some kids coming along and climbing on it like a jungle gym and bending the hinges. A lock would do the same thing but I think it wouldn't give as much support. Ya, those are mine at my place near Hinton, AB. I'm going to do something similar at the new place in Regina. I love the "ranch" look, and want to bring some AB back to SK with me!!

The hinge system that we fab'd up was very simple, but very robust, and I think/hope will work well with a gate opener.
