Any thoughts on removing gas smell from my trunk

In my earlier days as an airline mechanic I use to work in fuel tanks from time to time. No matter how well the tanks were drained and purged they always had a little fuel remaining in them. Well after working 8 hours in a fuel tank your hair and clothes always smelled horrible. So one night after being in a tank one of the old timers told me to soak my clothes and wash my hair with tomato juice. So on the way home I picked up two quart cans of tomato juice. Took my clothes off in the basment and placed them them in a 5 gallon bucket with one quart of the tomato juice. Jumped in the shower and poured the other can of juice all over my head while rubing it into my hair. Well I worked midnight shift and would get home every morning about the time my wife got up. So the wife gets up and comes into the bathroom where I'm covered in RED tomato juice. She peeks around the shower curtain and just starts screaming bloody murder. Now to make things worse I had no idea she was there. So I don't know if the tomato juice worked, or if my heart stopping and restarting 3 times had anything to do with it.
