We had the bank in front of our house cleaned off last summer and now want some sort of ground cover on it.. We have 3,000 bare root liriope spicata being delivered tomorrow...

Anyone want to come help plant it over the weekend??

Seriously, I think it is going to be a long weekend of make hole, insert plant, compress soil around plant.. Move 8" and lather, rinse, repeat 2999 more times.. lol

I attached a photo of our bank.. it is about 9' from ditch to crown and the area right in front of the house (to the electric pole) is about 180' long.. if this grows well we still have a couple hundred more feet of bank to do..

Right now we have about 2 or 3 friends that are coming to help (+my wife and I)..

I figure it will take close to 13 man hours to get them all planted.. so thats about 3 hours of work/person... OR that is what I keep telling myself.. lol

I believe you would be 100% correct.. hehe.. and t least I wont be bending over planting stuff though - I may not need to chiropractor on monday..

We are suppose to get rain, so that will make the weekend even less fun..

Very nice house! We were looking to move to Va. a few years back, Bedford is one of the counties we were looking at. I really liked Lynchburg, literally NO crime!!! Except it was hard to find a flat spot!

Any time I estimate the time for a project I find that I almost need to double it to be close! Enjoy.

thanks.. We love Bedford (big enough, but not too big).. We have most of everything you need now locally (lowes, walmart, ruby tuesdays, applebees, tractor supply, Southern States)..

How many acres are you looking for?

I certainly hope not.. I am assuming you can plant 4 per minute, which seems reasonable in my mind... Ill let you know for use after this weekend

I would but I ummm, heeeh, errrr, have to change the air in my tires. Yeah that's it, I'm changing the air in my tires this weekend.

Nice looking place!

Four per minute? Reach for a beer and you are down two plants, just like that. I hope you are not being overly optimistic, but you may be.

Do yo0u have a PHD or sub soiler or plow..where you could streamline the operation..if you could pop in the holes or dig a furrow it would be much quicker..My FIL and I planted several hundred Leyland Cypress trees on time that way years ago and they are 50' tall now..we did not lose a one and it sure made it a breeze..think about it...

I second the furrow method divide your bulbs into rows, and start trenching at the top, a furrow at a time, parallel to your lawn. That way you are always working away from the completed area. Or, you may do one row at a time, vertically, working across the slope. Team work is key. One person trenches, followed by the planter, followed by the waterer. That takes only three people. Too many workers can slow you down; unless you have another team of three scheduled to give you a break after a couple of hours. Just keep it in rotating teams of three. It will go faster, and you won't be stumbling over one another, or tripping on tools, etc..

We would love about 50 acres of woods and fields. Unfortunately, we both work for a utility , so we will have to wait till retirement. We sold our log home and 53 acres because of the astronomical taxes. How'd you make out with the elliptical?

That area is pretty, I've looked into the area a few yrs back as a possible retirement area. I'm still looking around down the shenandoah valley. I think tomorrow might be a washout, supposed to be a lot of rain.

to speed things up, if its not going to rain the days before you could get a bar planter (dibble bar, osk bar etc) and make the holes ahead of time, that way they are spaced out the way you want them. then all everyone has to do is put the plant in and cover.

<deleted text> How'd you make out with the elliptical?

I got a price from the mfg ($20 + s/h) - my wife 'thinks' she can find the old one, so I am holding off

the planting is coming along pretty well.. After getting warmed up, and figuring out the best way - I can get 4 or 5 per minute - but then you have to move down (while sliding down the muddy bank) and start over so you loose time there..

I was using my finger to make a hole, but that didnt take long to figure out isnt the best way.. Now i make 4 holes with a trowel then put those plants in and move down..

We are about 1/4 done and we will get back on it tomorrow..

These are bare root plants so they are tiny things (no bigger than a pencil) - so you dont need much of a hole..
