Looking for some help from you guy's that know a thing or two about welding. I attached a few pictures of my back hoe which I busted on a very stubborn Oak tree stump. This is the upper hinge joint on my BH which is completely busted through on one side and bent on the other. I would like to know what the forum thinks is the best coarse of action to tell the welder/fabricator I will contract to fix it. I am somewhat embarrassed /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif that I pushed my beloved tractor beyond it's capabilities, so be gentle with me with your comments /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sh-t happens. You now know where the weak link to your backhoe is. Fisrt thing to do is to straighten out the metal. The broken part will need to be ground down to a point on one or both sides depending on accessability to get the maximum penetration into the joint. I would then double up the steel in that area by placing a plate over both sides and welding it around the outside edges. You could also drill holes thru the new plate and spot weld it into place for added strength. I am not a welder by trade but have been doing it since 1971.

ronjhall,

Not sure what you mean by the position of the break. There is probably a term used by professionals (I am not one of those) that would be associated to this particular joint. Basically, this is the joint at highest point on the hoe in the closed position. In others words, right hand joy stick up and down. I do not have a picture that shows the hoe completely but I attached another side view of the break. Thanks for you help.

rtvman -

JimR's suggestions seem spot on - but I'm no pro welder either.

For folks with plenty of welding experience - you may want to post in the Build It Yourself forum - or perhaps also in the Parts / Repairs forum.

I'd think a good welding / metal fabrication shop will know how to repair / reinforce the break.

Good luck!

Dan

Could the dealer fix this under warrantee? It seems to me that all the hydraulic releaf valves should have kicked in properly so that you could never have broken this joint.

From a welding class that I took last year, a good welding joint is more strong than the other piece not welded. So, really, if you get a good welding joint you won't need a another plate over it.

Now, for the strength of the knuckle, a plate might give you a some more strength, but if that was the case then the manufacter should have put it in there already. I would still have the broken piece welded back then put the new plate over that and weld it.

Just looks like something bad happened.
good luck

I don't think a warranty covers something broke because of operator error. By golly, if so I have all kinds of warranty stuff around the house!

Peter,

It's a 96' and would be out of warrantee. Besides, it was my fault that I tried to force the stump out like I did. I was trying to leverage it out on one side of the bucket which put a lot of unbalanced force on the left side. Just a dummy mistake. Thanks.
