Anybody buy bulk motor oil?

A resurrection of a 2011 post by an oil salesman. WOW>

This does bring up a point though. Comparing 2011 oil prices to todays prices with our present $35 per barrel oil should be cheaper. I haven't priced oil recently since I have a couple years supply on hand already but it might be a good time to stock up if the price has fallen like gas and diesel.

It is interesting. Hugh glut of oil on the world market and at close yesterday oil was $33.97 to $34.23. Wholesale gas was $1.16 per gallon.
Oil at retail has not fallen since 2011 and in some cases cost more.
Gas prices here are $1.79 retail.

When I was a kid in the sixties and seventies we sold gas at $0.19 gal at the low point and made $0.03 per gal (good money). Now self-serve stations are making upward of $0.63 gal.

With the glut of oil on the market for so long motor oil and hyd. oil should be falling as well. I suspect the producers are limiting production to keep the price high.

IIRC from looking at the oil in Walmart the other day the motor oil prices are higher than when I first posted this back in 2011. I have read somewhere that says the price of motor oil is dictated more by the price of the additives than it is by the price of oil. Dunno if that is true or if it is more the case that retailers don't feel pressure to lower motor oil prices when the market fluctuates.

.
Can you provide some sort of source for that bit of info? That’s a LONG ways from what I’ve heard from people that own gas stations. The money was always in selling beer, cigarettes, etc….

I bought a 55 gal drum of Mobil Fleet 15-40 about six months ago. I paid $580. I run that oil in everything that burns diesel.

I remember buying Pennzoil by the case (24 cans) at Target on sale for $12.00.

I recently switched to buying oil in 55 gallon drums. It isn't truly bulk. Bulk is when you have your own tank and a truck comes and fills it. Local distributors have a 200 gallon minimum. True bulk oil is quite a bit cheaper than buying it any other way. $3-4 dollars a gallon cheaper.

The 55 gallon drum is not much cheaper than buying gallon jugs on sale but the convienience factor is great for me. Combined my diesel equipment uses over 50 gallons of oil so it gets to be a pain buying all those jugs. I also have an air powered pump with a digital meter so it is a snap putting the exact amount into things.

Well I was in Walmart a few days ago and the price on Valvoline 5w-30 etc. was down almost $2 on the 5 qt jugs... 'Price Rollback'. So with any luck motor oil prices are starting to come down.
