My Uncle was mowing with a Sickle Bar Mower and mowed over a new born fawn...

He wrapped it up and took it to the local wildlife museum... the Fawn died on the way and the museum had it stuffed... they think it was only hours old...

Didn't actually run over one, but found it lying right next to the previous cut. If I had been 2 ft further in it would have been gone.
Was told after that the new ones have no scent, and when very young will just stay perfectly still no matter what. Pray looking for them will not find them, and they will stay that way till MOM returns. At least that seemed to be the case with the one I found. Would just look at me with those big brown eyes from there in the grass 2 ft away and never moved. Even went to get neighbor and still didn't n move. Was gone later that day after I quit mowing. Just natures way i guess. Sorry for your luck, but you couldn't have known.

I had to keep a close eye out to avoid at least a dozen fawns this summer while shredding. I'm really suprised but thankful I didn't hit one. I had 130 acres of CRP to cut before the end of July. But found myself leaving several acres in a couple of spots that the fawns would get up and move, but just kept coming back by the time I returned for the next pass. Fortunately by the end of July they had grown a little bigger and moved into a nearby forest. I had already told myself that if it did happen, that it was likely sick or lame and I would be helping make an otherwise natural process go more quickly. Nothing you could do.

We were just discussing this last week at work. Someone was telling of how that had happened to them. Two weeks ago a family member notice a doe standing in the open near the house for no apparent reason. I had noticed it from the barn earlier in the day but didn't think much of it. Family member gets closer to the doe and noticed a fawn hung in the net fence. He was able to remove it and I called a veterinarian friend and found a place he could take it and get it checked out. They were going to give it medication and return it when it was able. Hate you had that happen, but sometimes things beyond our control do happen.

Thats a bummer! I try to go slow when im brush cutting, to give the critters a chance to hit the road before i come along. If my wife were to read this thread she would freak!

That is bad, I have not had that happen to me. My neighbor ran over a new born calf. It tore him up, I mean bad for a few days.

Little off trend but--

Couple of winters back, I was driving on a slick iced up road (in 4 wheel drive) when a small deer jumped the snow bank and landed a foot or two in front of my car.

Being icy it's four legs sprawled outwards and I heard a loud 'thump' as I rode over it.

I dragged it to the side of the road, called the police to report the road kill and drove on home.

Front of the car sustained minor damage ($300.)and the police called me later saying someone had picked up the deer.
Having no fault insurance in this province meant that I had no coverage as the deer did not have a licence to be on the road.

Here is a pic of the fawn I had to leave a few acres un-cut for. Happy to report has grown bigger and moved on so I could finish shredding.

Yup - I hit one last year... in tall grass on a path I keep mowed. Makes you completely sick. Then the stupid doe shows up and just stares at you... makes you feel even worse. I know exact where you are coming from.
