Thanks for the info. I think I will lick my wounds on Norton, remove it and go with the AVG package. I bought the NIS package that can be installed on three machines because I was going to put it on my laptop as well. I hadn't got to it yet and I now I am glad I didn't. But I do have Windows Defender on the laptop and it doesn't seem to do any better than NIS. Does anyone have any experience and/or comments about Windows Defender?

It seems to be at least harmless and non-invasive. It doesn't seem to slow things down. It is based on the original Giant Spyware products which MS assimilated, but I have never seen it catch anything. Maybe that is a tribute to my safe operational habits.

I used Norton for while then switched to "Computer Associates" software. I guess a tradename is "E-Trust". Anyways, this was recommended to me by the "IS" people that take care of all of the computers for the city I work for. I have been using it for a year or so on two computers at home, both with XP and there has not been any problems. Norton and McAfee have too much of a "footprint" in terms of the memory they take up. Plus, I noticed that the E-trust software has a much better user interface than the rest.

The cheapest place I found to buy from is TigerDirect.com Best Deals - Computer Parts, PC Components, Desktop Computers, Laptops, Notebooks

I've bought two computers, an Ipod, and plenty of networking equipment from them, great customer service!

I use Norton Anti Virus with good results, used Norton Internet Security in the past and had nothing but trouble. The Internet Secuity caused more problems than it helped with. I stuck with the basic Norton Anti Virus and use WebRoot Spy Sweeper along with a router firewall. Works well for a home application, I don't know how this combo would work for a business pc.

I've been using Norton for the past year and have hated. It caused problems w/ Outlook and slowed the computer to a crawl. I was just too lazy to do anything about it. Said this year I was going to go with the AVG. I bought a new laptop and it came with CA Internet Security Suite for free on 3 computers. I used it a couple of years ago on my computer and this year on the kids computers. I've been happy with it, so that is what I installed on the desktop last night. Seemed to speed the computer back up quite a bit. Now that I've got the laptop though, I still need to format and rebuild the desktop machine as it has been 3 years and tons and tons of stuff on it. A lot of it not used and I know all of that is killing it. While I'm doing that I might go ahead and upgrade the video card so I'm ready for Vista. It is a P4 2.4 w/ a gig of RAM. Might also bump the RAM to 2 gig if I catch 1 gig sticks on sale cheap enough.

Sometimes easier said than done.

If you have problems, there is a program called RNAV2003 that is specifically for removing Norton's garbage software from your computer. It is supposedly on the Symantec site; I never could find it there and had to get it from some other site. (RNAV stands for Remove Norton Anti Virus)

I will never again have Norton ANYTHING on my computer.

Well I downloaded AVG Internet Security yesterday. It was a long download (36MB) given I am stuck with low speed dial-up (best connection approx. 31kbps, typical download about 3 kbps) but all went well. It was an easy installation and it seems to be working fine. I have one small glich with one of my e-mail programs (Eudora) but I think it will be easily overcome when I talk to that IP tomorrow. At the very least I have the satisfaction of AVG saying that it found various threats and did something about them. Norton Internet Security's fate is to sit on the shelf and collect dust.
