Anybody here ever make money gambling?

I may have already posted part of this on the thread, but recent news made me think about it all when this thread popped up on my feed again.

18 years ago I took my then g/f to Vegas for memorial day weekend and when she burned through all her money, and I was up about $500 on slots, I gave it to her so she would have a good wrap up of the trip.

Well in the 3 hours we had left before we had to head to the airport after I had I had given her my winnings, of course she burned through it as well.

Later in our friendship she shared with me that she found it difficult to restrain herself from all kinds of different gambling games, bingo, slots, scratch offs, so on and so forth.

long story short, we ended our romantic relationship a year or so after the trip, but remained close friends. She got married a few years later, and not more than a year or two after they filed bankruptcy, they had to give up the home they lived in and pretty much lived hand to mouth.

they then divorced.

we had slowly drifted apart, so we didn’t talk much in the last five years, but 3 years ago I read in the paper, she got married again, and last November I read that they also filed bankruptcy (chap 13)

now I’m not saying the bankruptcy history is being caused by her gambling but it sure makes a person wonder.

Many years ago my wife and I went with her parents over to the boat in Joliet, IL to do some gambling. It was the first time we'd ever been on a riverboat casino. Wife and I lost $100 before the boat left the dock, so we spent the next two hours sitting in the top deck eating hot dogs and popcorn while enjoying the lovely view of the Des Plaines River industrial wasteland. 🤣

^^^ Thinking the same.

Dad worked as a Special Nevada Deputy casino based mostly as bodyguard escort for headliners and that cured him quick seeing the same people coming back every month and leaving broke... often the casino comped the bus ride home as losers hanging around bad for business

He would tell us it only takes one to win and never gambled more than the coins in his pocket...

I've done the Hold the Winnings for friends more than a few times...

Several were up quite a bit and most left only with what I was holding...

Hey I won good on slot machines when a teen.
LOL, I drilled a coin and used nylon fish line so that my coin came back for re use.
I'd ring up all the odds and shoot the balls blindly as I walked over to claim my win.

Note that I only did this once just to prove a point.
OK, I do like to play but, like when in Vegas, I have a set limit just to enjoy the atmosphere.0 and free drinks.

Then I once signed up for local Lotto's on all the group tickets.
Cost me close to $50. but I 'gambled' the odds were with me.
I did win! Like $65, or so. (LOL, beat the odds?)

Then a while back I was stopped for speed and I pleededd I was using the down hill acceleration to coast as far as possible to save fuel as I was dry.
The LEO looked at my gauge and let me go.
Bought a Lotto ticket but that was a no go.

Sir, I do not disagree! She was my one true love, and at the time I could not figure out why we could not make it work.

in my later aftersite I wonder if she knew she was trouble for me or if theBig Guy upstairs was looking out for me……

Louisiana jumped into the casino business. 10 top murder cities in the USA, Louisiana has three of those top ten positions. I'm just north of Shreveport, and it's a dump. I always go to Texarkana, a little closer and a lot nicer.

Been there done that , sounds like the same gal or her sister ! :ROFLMAO: in all seriousness Sir I have no doubt the true and only King was looking out for you and still does ! When we young and filled with cheap tractor bargain oil we look @ and for coca cola bottle type fiqures and seductive eyes (lol) . When we mature spiritually and intellectually as we wisen up some of us sooner than others , we tend to look @ the heart and appreciate it more !

I don't think its something that can be taught , it works both ways also . 🦫

For the past month, they have been discussing building a casino in downtown Lansing, and those who support the idea claim the real benefit of such a project is the revenue it will create for the city. Many of those who are opposed to the casino say gambling is basically a tax on the poor, and while that may be true in some ways, I have always felt that gambling is a tax on the foolish.

As for me, I would never waste my time or money visiting a casino 12 miles away, should it ever be constructed, and there are currently casinos operating in Central Michigan an hour's drive either north or west of us. (Firekeepers and Soaring Eagle) We have only been to Soaring Eagle one time, and that was nearly 20 years ago, and only because my mother enjoyed going there so much. To me, since the odds always favor the house, you are basically throwing your money away.

Most nights we can view commercials on our TV that show couples with movie star good looks winning megabucks at those two casinos mentioned above or enjoying one of the other amenities available there (dining, dancing, massages, fancy lodging, etc). My brother and his wife went to the Soaring Eagle casino last weekend, mainly because their oldest son attends college in that city. My nephew later told me my sister in law won $50, but not how much the three of them spent to "win" that much. 😆

Casinos tempt us by saying "you can't win if you don't play"....yeah, have YOU ever played and won? We never did. 😆
Nothing good ever comes out of it no matter what they promise. The gamblers go in and never come out till they spend their roll, nothing to benefit the area or people. Then taxes have to go right back to fight the rise in crime....

To be young and in love...

Know a few where it was meant to be be managing rentals for decades seen way too much of one pulling down the other.

Some successes started with the odds against but proved everyone wrong...

Talk about gambling!
