Anybody know to "seal" a dirt pond?

I was reading about rice growing this weekend and one of the things that came up was the purpose of paddying. Rice farmers churn the bottoms of their wet paddies into a very fine slurry that in addition to mixing the soil with organics, also compacts and seals the bottom of the paddy to retain water better.
