I still think they look like the cover on an electric clock motor. The older water softners have a clock motor in them. Looks just like that to me. Ever see the motor in a timer.......same thing.

Maybe it ran out of oil a while back. That could also exacerbate the problem with parts falling off.

they look like shims for setting toe on the rear of some import cars the way the pattern is but not sure how thick it looks to be..
