Was thinking about getting a silage special and start baling corn then wrapping it in the field for balage.

Has anyone ever done this?

Seems to me even though it would be more expensive, I could run a lot more cattle as I would not have to have nearly as much land for hay.

What were you going to cut it with? ordinary knife bars wouldn't stand up to cutting corn stalks on that kind of basis. Even with the newer balers with the recutters I doubt that you would get a fine enough chop to expell enough air out to prevent spoilage. Would the baler belts stand up to the corn stalks poking on them all the time, I've seen what a twig can do to them.

I don't know about what you're wanting to do, but in this thread I posted some pictures and a little bit of information about some corn silage in my area.

If you are going to wrap crops for silage then use small grains, good grass hay, Sudan grass or alfalfa. The usable protein in hay wrapped is actually higher than corn silage. Corn does yield a large amount of forage per acre but you can only cut it once. Many people in the South wrap Bermuda grass and cut it every 28 days (after the first cutting) until frost and then no-till drill a small grain in the fall for a winter pasture.
