beaver wizz
They used to make perfumes from some nasty crap in a gland around a beaver's rectum
And the joke about Baby Foreskins in Face cream is not a joke, they really do put baby foreskins in face cream.
I don't know what it does but it's gross

I have extract made with potato vodka, spiced rum (my fave) and maple Jim Beam... they have been brewing for about 19 months (brew for at least 12 for the best extract) but a lot of folks in my vanilla co-op group swear by Everclear cut with distilled water (50/50) as it introduces the least amount of flavor into the vanilla extract. Using straight Everclear or grain alcohol is too strong and will dry the beans. For single fold use 1 oz of beans to 8 oz of your choice of alcohol - double fold would be 2 oz of beans per 8 oz (anything over double fold is just wasting beans). The FB group Indri's Vanilla Bean Group has BY FAR the best prices/quality that I have found, along with great tips and tricks for getting the most out of your beans.

DIY Vanilla extract: yes. Beans we got in Indonesia when we spent a year in South East Asia. Cheap rum bought at airport with last remaining local cash on a Caribbean island. Combined the 2 and forgot about it for 3 years. Great stuff for baking.

Beaver vanilla flavouring: Happy to hear beavers provide something useful!

I'm on my 2nd batch of home made. First batch was made with cheapest vodka I could find, came out ok after one year after two years is much better. I used 6 beans (slit lengthwise) to 16 oz. This batch is same ratio but with Jim Beam Bourbon. Made 8 bottles. Used beer bottles that have a rubber stopper with a wire bail (Grolsch style). We'll find out about the flavor in Aug of 23 or later

Yes, making homemade vanilla extract is a popular DIY project and is surprisingly simple! All you need are a few ingredients and some patience. Here's a basic guide to making your own vanilla extract:

Ingredients:

  1. Vanilla Beans: Use high-quality vanilla beans. Madagascar Bourbon beans are a popular choice, but you can also use Tahitian or Mexican beans for different flavor profiles.
  2. Alcohol: Use a neutral spirit with at least 35% alcohol (70 proof). Vodka is the most common choice, but rum or bourbon can also be used for a richer flavor.
  3. Glass Jar or Bottle: A clean, airtight glass container to store the extract.

Steps:

  1. Split the Vanilla Beans: Use a sharp knife to slice each vanilla bean lengthwise, leaving about an inch at the end intact. This helps release the seeds and flavor.
  2. Place Beans in the Jar: Add the split beans to your glass jar or bottle. A general rule is to use about 3-5 beans per 1 cup (240 ml) of alcohol.
  3. Add Alcohol: Pour the alcohol over the beans, ensuring they are fully submerged.
  4. Seal and Store: Close the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place (like a pantry or cupboard).
  5. Wait and Shake: Let the mixture steep for at least 8 weeks, shaking the jar occasionally (every week or so) to help the infusion process. The longer it steeps, the stronger the flavor will be.

Tips:

  • Quality Matters: The better the vanilla beans and alcohol, the better the extract.
  • Top It Off: If you use some of the extract, you can top it off with more alcohol and add fresh beans to keep the batch going.
  • Patience is Key: While you can start using the extract after 8 weeks, it will continue to develop flavor over several months.

Uses:

Homemade vanilla extract from madagascar can be used in any recipe that calls for store-bought extract, such as baked goods, desserts, or even beverages.

Making your own vanilla extract is not only cost-effective but also allows you to control the quality and flavor. Plus, it makes a great homemade gift!

Just starting on our 3rd batch. Going to make about 20, 16oz bottles, using 6 grade B beans per bottle. 6 of scotch, 3 of tequila, 6 of Old crow, 6 of Jim Beam and 2 of cheap Vodka. Or however it works out as the Vodka and Tequila bottles are not full.
Gave some bottles away as Christmas presents, and still have 2 left.
