Anyone ever eaten or taste Horse Meat?

I don't know about horse meat but heard (from my aunt & uncle) that there was a burger joint in Ohio when I was a kid that served horse meat burgers and people thought they were the best. They stopped because the feds told them that meat served to the public has to be federally inspected.

Now, dog meat is good. Ate a lot of it in Southeast Asia before I found out what it was.

Dog meat was a starvation preventor in our outfit, but horses were regularly killed, intentionally or otherwise, they grilled up on the open fire quite well and the 'Yards used some kind of seasoning that made the ribs downright delicous!

I ate it when I was on a project in Algeria. Like others have said, the French like it and Algeria used to be a French colony. No issues with the taste, the texture was different though. It was neither good nor bad, just ordinary. I'd eat it again, but not necessarily my first choice.

In all my travels around this globe, protein is protein, I can't list all the things that I have eaten. Hogs, are smarter than dogs, but dogs are on the dinner table in places, and hogs are on ours. Look into the eyes of your steers, and they seem to love you just as much as a horse. We raise lower species to be our food source, and horses and cattle are non-native species to north America, culling horses I think is most humane and needs to be done, there are just too many running wild out there, and having a hard time finding feed.

On the last drive through eastern Oregon last year, saw a number of wild herds of horses. And think that and from what I have read, that this is becoming a common problem in a number of western states. I don't know what effect it is having on our deer and elk but think it might have an effect.

Never had the pleasure but if I was hungry I sure would. I have been told but not sure that horse meat actually gets better with age.

As anyone who has owned horses will tell you, often as not the last day(s) of a horses life are not pleasent. Typically, they colic or come down with laminitis. Both are quite painful with the former going into about three days max before a decision needs to be made if not sooner. The latter can drag on a little longer.

I have a suggestion for someone who is against humane slaughter. Spend some time helping out with unwanted horses. Especially that big black one over there with the flared nostrils and fire in his eyes. You know, the one not even Monty Roberts, John Lyons, etc, will not touch.

My BIL lived in downtown LA until he unexpectedly lost his wife and then moved to Oklahoma. He heard me on the phone a few years ago talking about the ban on horse slaughter...when I hung up he commented how could anyone kill "Flicka" .. I told him you have lived in the big city to long and know not what you are talking about.

I offered him a job at the stockyard helping to check in horse's and load out. At the end of the night he told me he had never seen so many horse's at one time in all his life and he commented on some of them that are just mean. He especially recalled a gray that showed aggression...he said I believe that horse would kill someone.

I know not all horse's are candiates ... just saying if city folk want to resuce one thats fine ... just have a little sense along with the pocket book to do so.

Personally I like all animals. And hearing some people from various groups, it is apparent they have NOT been around animals.

Animals are HARD to take care of. They are 24X7X365 in my world. They don't want for much, but they are ANIMALS.

You start getting around to their older age, they become HARDER to care for.

I'd much rather put an ANIMAL down than watch them suffer, or starve. Starving is the worst. Nothing should have to starve on this planet, nothing.....

With this being said, I have seen such instances, Not too long ago was over at a farm picking up some things and this guy had rescue 2 horses, Said he had them for about 2 months and that I should had seen them first getting them with ribs showing etc, etc, said was a sad sight .... he went on to say that he got them from a person who had gotten 10 in as rescue and he himself could not care for them all, It does seem inhuman to let any animal starve,

The comment I'm about to make probably should have it's own thread, but I'll say it anyway....... with all so many of the starving horse population in the world, why do we spend money on buying Guns/ammo and all the other necessities of hunting deer to eat, although I really do know the answer to this, deer needs to be thin out in order for the species to survive,
So I suppose this is more of a statement than a question, I have in fact taste Venison/deer and wasn't too particularly fond of it, because of it's wild green/ iron taste, Many people ( Hunters crave this taste) just not me... If a horse is grain feed for purpose of slaughter I could most likely eat it, although if it were to run wild as deer do eating wild vegetation etc, I'm sure it would take on the same taste as deer, .... But getting back to my statement... why wouldn't deer hunters simply take a free Horse to eat instead of spending Money and the trouble to hunt down deer? again I know the answer, Hunting is also a sport and many Folks do this as recreation,;)
Don't get me wrong... I'm not an animal activist;) just trying to make some since of it:cool: I do hunt small game squirrel & rabbit to cook in stews with gravy:licking: But I will not eat a cat simply because they are overpopulating the planet, Besides they probably not much meat to them, most all fur,

perhaps I should shift to it being a necessity rather then for fun of the sport,
being there are so many starving people in the world... and starving horses, it only makes since to me to give the horse meat to the people who need the food & nourishment , or is this really going to be more a profit gain in marketing horse meat to sale, than actually the need to thin them out;) and if this were the case why not include deer in the markets, I'm sure plenty of deer hunters that crave the taste would buy it when out of season:thumbsup:

When my father sold his old mare, with a sagged back and no teeth, he only wanted to sell it to a trader he knew as long as he had the horse, and made him promise the horse would be butchered in Holland, and not travel in a train to Poland or so, days without food and being bashed by other horses in a train wagon.

Lots of horse meat ends up ground in sausages and hamburgers, unrecognisable. Also its smoked and filed to use on sandwiches. smoked horse roast is pretty common in Holland, and some people with certain diseases eat it because it contains certain elements necessary for oxygen exchange in the body.
