Anyone ever have this happen?

I had never heard of a yaupon until I moved to Texas. I'm sure that in the wild yaupons can be a real pain, but they can be wonderful landscape bushes. They are evergreen, have small glossy-green leaves and small red berries, grow fast, are drought tolerant, don't seem to attract insects, aren't eaten by deer, fill in nicely when pruned, and come in low-growing varieties for foundation plantings or large varieties that can grow up to between 15-20 feet if allowed to. They are so common down here that people are tired of them, but they sure are handy for those "impossible" places where you want some greenery.

Thats the steering wheel spinner knob.Back in California when I was growing up we called them make out knobs, so you could steer with your left hand and have your right hand on your girl./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Wally, I guess kubotadriver must be too young to remember the days when few, if any, cars had power steering, and none had seat belts, and your girlfriend snuggled up close when you were driving./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Don't forget Bird, Kubotdriver probably doesn't know what a bench seat is either! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif He's probably trying to figure out how the girl snuggles up with a console in between! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Didn't some states out law them??

Better have a good grip if your bucket full and your traveling over area...ouch. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

Very true, Golfgar4./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif And how many of us had our girlfriend shift the gears so we didn't have to take our right arm from around her?/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I had a spinner knob on an old tractor and was brush hoggin. I hit a stump that was hid in the weeds with the right front tire. The spinner knob spun around and hit me on the back of the hand and broke it. I no longer use spinner knobs! By the way my old beater truck does not have power steering and has a bench seat. Now if the wife would just cooperate!/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Dozernut,
I've had the knob snapped out of my hand and slap me in the front and back of my hand a couple of times.Ain't broke it yet but yeah it hurts, especially in the back of the hand.I'll take the pain for the convenience in steering.

Well, you guys have got me. I am still a young'un.... Under 40 anyway... I had never heard of a suicide knob being called a make-out knob. And to tell the truth I didn't even know that people would put them in cars.

thanks for the info.

I had a 49 nash ambassador for my second car. I could scoot over to the left far enough that my girl could slide under the wheel and drive. It confused a lot of people. But very handy.

The term is actually " Necker's Nob".

i boasted the main seal on my stump grinder. BUT did not know it until much later. we had a very large stump with a huge surface root system to boot to remove. all along grinding away at that job i was not aware what happened.

my machine is a power trac 425. almost everything is hydraulic. when two thirds finished with the job, my lift arms would only move sluggishly, the stump grinder turned slower but when i attempted to reposition the tractor th steering had fail to react to my commands. i successfully had drained most of my hydraulic fluid onto my grinding job a drop at the time, without me knowing until the total hydraulic systems failure.

And I always thought they were just called "thumb busters"

Gut busters is what I call 'em. First modification to my old 8N was to take that dang thing off. It kept getting caught in the pocket of my overalls. No problem for skinny guys I guess. But back in the sixties....yes I do remember having the girlfriend shift for me so I wouldn't have to use my right hand when driving.....thanks for that memory.

Jim? Didn't the front seat also lay down on your
Ambasador, seemed to me that there were never
any heads up watching the movie at the drive-in in those.
We had a 60 Mercury with no power steering, it took
both hands to aim it. Dad may have had a reason
we got It with no power----------you know I think it took
both feet to stop it too. Huge car!
As for the tractor , from time to time I will look
up under there and it is amazing how imbeded sticks can
get, I've cut them out with a sawzall before.
Also the second post on this thread with the attachment
photo of bottom armor. A work of art and preparation for a
mine field or another Dirty Harry movie with a tractor rather than a bus.
Best to y'all

Yes it had the lay down front seat. You could drop the front seat back and you had a bed that you could lay down and get real comfortable. I enjoyed many a movie but couldn't tell you what was on the screen.

Reminds me.. an elderly farmer was driving down the road with his wife beside him. "Honey", she said, "when we were younger we never used to sit this far apart."

The old farmer, behind the wheel, grinned and said "Well, I ain't moved!"

Yeah, Bob, I thought about that story, but just didn't post it; figured a lot of our younger members might not understand it./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
