Anyone ever replaced the parking pawl on a John Deere 5420?

Very interesting. I have often wondered how much one can trust the pawl on a steep hill or that and a heavy load.

I am fortunate to have a Mennonite After Market JD specialist (Martin Farm Service, Mount Forest Ontario, Canada) within comfortable tractor driving distance. GREAT people to deal with. Just for FUN, I called them about this. Estimate $1000 to $1500 CDN for Labour, change parking Pawl in 5000 series tractor.

I would guess the going rate is about $75 to $100/hours and wild guess, 8 - 12 hours to do the work. So sounds like a much more reasonable price.

And that's in Canadian rupies.

Maybe the JD dealer has figured in WHIMIS, Workplace Violence, Sensitivity Training and Safety Meetings. Maybe a little PTSD therapy afterwards. I wish I was kidding.

I haven't found an independent repair shop within easy driving distance but for that price I could hire a trucking company to haul it a long way. It is a 5420 with shuttle shift and cab. I understand they have to remove the cab and split the tractor just to get to the little pawl. And it is the only thing holding it while parked. No parking brake. My son-in-law was driving it on a bumpy road and tried to shift into third when he hit a bump. It caused him to bump the park position and he heard it go. He didn't say but I bet he felt it go as well.

That may be a game changer for the Mennonite price. I'm almost certain, that would not be for a cab.

I know its an old post however, JD Service in Maine just quoted me $7000 to replace the Parking Pawl in a 5065e tractor.
