I have seen him answer this question several times..."Plans, piss on that, I'll show my plans" He then taps on his head and "that's where my plans are"
Although I am sure his answer is partly an act, he is really old school and thinks 3-D in his head. I have never seen him work off a drawing. Mostly it is his memory of how the old ones were put together plus his imagination.
He has at least 6 distinct "models" I have seen and rarely are the same models identical.

I'm going to add a hit & miss to my collection for my listening pleasure one of these days.

I like to hear one of those twins running /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Pop...Pop...Pop...
Sometimes I just kick one over just groove to the rhythm. More fun than TV to me.

Once I brought one over to my friend's house to show him. I started it up and his 4 year old grand nephew appeared at the house window, 10 seconds later he runs out the door babbling all sorts of questions

What's that...its a pop pop motor.
What's that...the flywheel...What's it do...it spins
What's that...the connecting rod...What's it do...connects the piston to the crankshaft
etc. etc.
After ten minutes of this he points at me and looks me in the eye with a serious expression and says "You are a pop pop motor head" and runs away.
Of course I think he meant poop poop head but I chose to take him at his word and couldn't have been more proud of
myself! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are quite a few folks in Michigan that collect hit and miss engines. I would love to have one and eventually will find one that suits my needs.
I live in Clare County Michigan and frequently at the county fair they have a bunch of the hit and miss engines. They usually have an ice cream maker powered by one.

I keep seeing an awful lot of parts for hit and miss engines at eBay. Frankly never knew what they looked like until I saw this post. Have admired a few at some of the local fairs.

I grew up around hit and miss engines as my Grandfather had the passion. He too started off with full scale engines and then as the years grew on him he moved to scale working models. He is long since gone but I have four of them displayed proudly in my office at home. A Galloway 5 HP and a matched set of IHC, one being an upright. I haven't run them in years and promised myself that I'll run them this year as it's been nearly 10 years now. A little white gas some new oil and........heaven.

When he passed my Dad and Uncle sold off 4 full size (yet small) very rare engines and about 10 scale models. These things are not cheap. They netted nearly $40k for the lot.

Regards,
Kevin

If you have any picures of your collection and are willing to post them I would be curious to see them.
