Im hoping to buy some 40' span trusses soon. I just am debating to poir concrete posts or use wood to bring up the height of the walls.

It may be worth your while to contact the company that originally built the building components. They would provide you the necessary information on spans to meet building requirements for a shop (live roof loading). Live loadings for snow may or may not be an issue where you are, but where we are - they treat pole barns, out buildings and animal housing different than homes, garages and shops. While you may not care, the building might not pass a buyer inspection in the future if you ever needed to sell. This may not be an issue for you, but it would be a shame to find out the trusses should have been on eight foot centers rather than ten to meet some requirement.

Around here (Alabama) we build pole barns out of them all the time. The posts are set on 12' centers (not a big worry about snow load). They are very economical to build with.

A local company will erect a 30x60x12 (roof and eves finished) for about $6500.00. A 40x60x12 is about $1500.00 more.

I have a 24x36x12 that I built out of them. I do like the head room the trusses provide. With 12' side walls you have about 15' clearance at the ridge. There is a brace that run across the bottom of the truss that takes up some room.

Be warned. They are hard to handle. You put them together on the ground and then raise them into position. You would need a boom truck or long pole on a front end loader to grab the truss in the middle and lift it onto the top of the 6x6 posts. You can't "roll them over" like you do a wood truss when installing it.

On a 14' side wall with a 40' truss and a 4/12 pitch you would need something that could reach about 22' high to set the trusses.

If they are that angle iron top & bottom, with round stock welded between in a zigzag pattern, they were popular here in MN about 30 years ago.

Don't know of any buildings still standing with them.... Snow load proved too much for what the design was.

Interesting. I've been looking into metal trusses because I'm starting to think about a pole barn. The metal trusses seem to offer a much more open interior at a price that is cheaper than cheap. But I haven't been able to find anyone further north than Augusta, GA, who offers them. You may be onto the reason why.

Here are some links I've found:
Adams Truss, Inc.
Armour Metals

The guys at the second link claim a 35 lbs/sq. ft. snow load rating which would be above the 30 lbs/sq. ft. RI requires.

The ones I am finding are from where people go in and tear down chicken houses. Most have 32' and 40' span trusses. I wish I could get the manufactures name of who made the trusses. I would like to know the load and the specs on them. I can get the 32' span trusses for $50 a set.

Saw this tonite in the news:

"University of Delaware extension specialist Bill Brown says at least a dozen poultry houses in Delaware and on Maryland's Eastern Shore have collapsed under the weight of snow."

Actually I heard over 50 went down, but found this much in the news.

Might be all sorts of trusses available. Slightly out of shape in spots.
