Anyone familiar with m-274 Army Mule?

Seabees in Nam we appropriated one from the army (how is not important) put a USN ID number on it and Bravo Company used it as the honey bucket mover. Worked great for that purpose due to its low bed. Those half barrel buckets got heavy; of course we used indigenous labor for the lifting. Really plowed through the loose sand on the beach area. I was the B Co commander for a short time; heard about the "mule", started to ask questions; Chief said "what mule, they went out with WW1". Dropped the subject.

Beautiful, artistic Gazebo...... How much could I expect for a Kawasaki Trans Mule? I asked my friend Mule owner about ATV's. His answer was that the ATV's depreciate while any military vehicle becomes more valuable. While that sounds good one must be able to keep the thing running. May not be easy. Thanks, Eddie

Prices are always increasing on UTV's and there are a lot of options out there. In 2012, when I bought my Mule, I looked at quite a few other models, but really liked the utilitarian and versatile design of the Kawasaki Trans Mule. I also think they are about as good an engine as Honda. It has power steering, fuel injection and a fair suspension when going at a fair rate of speed. Flat out, it's not that great on rough terrain. I paid $8,000 for mine brand new and financed it through the bank they recommended. I think I put $2,000 down and I had a $80 monthly payment for 5 years. I paid it off in two years, but liked the idea of such a low payment if something came up. The top was the hydraulic lift for the bed where about $1,500 more, and I installed both myself. I had a soft plastic removable windshield on it for three years that made a huge different in winter and rainy days, but it's time is over and this year I'm going to buy a hard plastic/glass type windshield for it. I've had it back to the shop for a rough idle, and they fixed it under warrantee even though it was after the warrantee was expired. The dealer said it was a known issue and they where taking care of it regardless of how old it was. If I was buying again, I would start with the Mule, but might step up to the FX Pro. I road in one and it was very impressive!!! More money too, so where I was financially at the time would be the deciding factor. I couldn't imagine living out here without a UTV of some kind. It hauls out the garbage can, gets the mail, hauls stuff to the burn pile, including weeds and feed bags. It's also just fun to go for a drive and look for tracks on the trails, or see what the water did during the last rains. When it snows here, it's way more fun to get around on then walking!!!

Only if you don't modify them, cut them, change them, paint them funny colours etc.

They were air-portable. The steering wheel & foot-pedal basket fold up, out of the way.

The people who pay top-dollar want them original. :2cents:

Buy a Gator - Like the Army did.

If I remember correctly, the steering wheel also flips down so you could drive it from the ground if you were under fire.

I know that's right.....I bought an ARMY tilting trailer to haul road gravel but it had the round hitch and I have REESE on my truck. I had a REESE welded on. Also, with 3 tons of gravel the locked wheels would SLIDE rather than tilt. So....being the genius that I am I had a crossbar welded on and a hyd cylinder attached. Finally, the tailgate was somewhat flimsy so I had a 2" angle welded to give it support as it dumped all the gravel. It's ideal for me but.....my military collector friend was aghast.
The only modification I envision for a MULE is co-pilot seat (factory) and a Reese hitch.....was that an option? I have a WINCH mounted on a Reese plate.

Too bad, the chinese or someone can't get the blue prints and clone them. It has to beat all this consumer junk being offered. Just the wheel size alone impresses me. The seating position kind of reminds me of the old Toyota vans where your feet and legs are up in the crumple zone.

You just wish you had a crumple zone on this thing. The basket with your feet in it is the first thing that hits.
