I'm about ready for a new commuter car. Before I go my typical ex-rental car from Enterprise rental, I thought I'd look at one of the Kia's. One of the dealers around here has a new Kia Spectra for $9900. And then a guaranteed trade in for your old car of $3000. I can walk out of there with a new car for $6900 with a 10yr/100K mile warranty.

Does anyone have a Kia? Is it worthy of being a commuter car, good for 150K miles? Will I feel like I'm riding and driving a soapbox, downhill racer?

prices sure sound good: i looked at a kia when we where shopping; they advertised they had a car comparable to but cheaper than the camry, when we got there, it was higher, then the saleman started telling me how much better than a toyota it was etc etc..so i went across the street and bought the camry for $17,000..

I noticed a news article recently that said J.D. Powers latest survey ranked the Kia very highly on "initial quality"; higher than the Toyota, in fact. Of course, it's my understanding that's from a survey of owners with new cars they've had for 3 months. It sure does appear, from what I see on the streets, that they're selling well, but I've never driven one or personally known anyone who had one.

All I can say is, it's too good to be true. To start out with, the MSRP is right about $15,000.00 and then they're gonna guarantee a blind (sight unseen) trade in of $3000.00. If you don't go for that deal, there's no hope for ya

Look at it this way; you will have a 10 year 100k warranty on the powertrain. You will have a vehicle that will get you there and back for 100k. Expecting it to go for 150k, in my opinion, will be asking a bit much. But, there again, how much will you have invested if it rolls snake eyes at 101k? They have improved in quality a huge amount in the last 5 years. How much? You will have to decide on that one. Good luck!

GSGanzer, I'm sorry but I went thru this same scenario 3 weeks ago, Amazing ads by Kia dealerships $6990 for a new Kia Rio, I wanted to retire my F350 to the ranch and use something else for the commute the V10 in the F350 4X4 Crewcab wasn't getting stellar MPG if you know what I mean. I hate to tell you this but I was equally excited about getting a great deal on a brand new car, I called them it is a standard no air cheapest everything and they only had one and they sold it "yesterday" the ad is still being run and if you call them they have bunches for this price. Go over there cash in hand and see what happens as I did. Today I'm driving a brand new Toyota Matrix got it for $385 below invoice so theyll make about $114. on the vehicle once they get their holdback money. BTW the KIA guys get very insulted when you go there to pick up your new Rio and they magically don't have it but they do have a bunch of comperable vehicles that they'll sell you between $14,000 and $18,000 and you call them a bunch of Liars and Cheats or whatever else I said that made them have me escorted out.
Sorry for the gloom but I tried to buy the magic car for 3 weeks and always just missed it HMM!.
I had to edit this post after I went back and reread yours, the ad their running here is without a $3000 trade $6990 is the sale price

I don't know how true it is cause I don't own a kia but, I was talking to a guy that works at a local auto parts store, and he told me that his girlfriend has a kia and the shocks went bad.He told me that he has not been able to get shocks for that kia from his auto parts store or any other parts store & the dealer would have to order them.He said that there are other parts for a kia that are hard to come by.

I expect exactly as you describe. I'll give them a quick look and won't tolerate any dealer games. I'm inclined to go buy a new Corolla or Civic anyway, if I decide to go the new car route. It's a shame that the dealers always want to play games like that. That's the main reason I buy ex-rent cars from Enterprise rental, no haggle and below blue book pricing.

I drove a Kia RIO from Orlando. Fl to Colorado Springs. Co in 2 days. I will never buy a Kia. The Rio only got 28 mpg (My Honda's get 40+mpg) and we wwere always looking for a gas station (small tank). The thing had no power to get over Raton Pass (elev 6-7K ft msl). I could hear the engine through the radio. It is funny now, but the trip was a very uncomfortable experience. Maybe for an in town commuter car it would work.

And the reason I've bought my last two from Carmax.
