Anyone have a Kindle?

I have a Sony Reader and would buy another one (don't really see the point in a touch screen though)...
I looked at the Kindle but I don't like (big brother) Amazon...

so does your local library and you are already paying (via tax dollars) for it.

I agree, I use the books by mail program and get 4-5 books every 3 weeks. Plus when i am looking for out of print books that i cannot purchase i can have them do an interlibrary loan. The books by mail program is a rural program that sends us prepaid bags of books, when we are done we just fip a tag around and send them back. That being said i am a fast reader 80-90 pages and hour if im really into a book. I go through a lot of books in a year, and this program has saved me $$$$.

What i said is 100% correct.

No, it's not. Facts apply, not opinions. Had you completely read my earlier post, you would have learned about the Kindle book licensing, not purchasing, agreement. You are not buying the book on the Kindle, you are licensing it. There's a difference between licensing and purchasing.

For those of you out of Kindle range or whatever, paperbackswap.com works great. You pay the postage to mail a book, that is your total cost. It works on a credit-debit system based on books you send and receive.

The discussion has veered into amazon.com, which I guess is natural since they are the Kindle seller. I think it's an amazing and innovative company, really a big help for rural folks when it comes to purchasing all sorts of things.

I do see some parallels between the early IBM mainframe or Microsoft PC days and, amazon and google. Both of them are trying to corner and hold a market segment. They are both leaving the gee whiz stage and people are taking a closer look at them and their policies.

You are not buying the book.

Many may not realize it but when a user buys software etc. either after-market or pre-installed you really don't own the software...unless you write a program yourself or pay a programmer to write it for you...you really don't own any software...what you buy is a license to use it...

Most folks never bother reading license/user agreements (if you don't agree no dice)

What I like about the Sony Reader is it has both a memory stick slot and a SD card slot...I know it's not practical to bother but I could load thousands of books and always have them in my reader that is slightly bigger than a paperback and less than 1/2" thick (like being able to take a library with you just about anywhere)

The newest model of the Sony Reader has a "touch" screen...personally I don't care for this feature...not only do I see little use for it (other to eliminate navigations and control buttons)...The big problem with touch screens on any device from cell phones to GPS navigation units is without a screen protector the lcd display screens get scratched and marked where they are most often touched...

In the case of the Sony reader ( I have not see the new model Sony) it is not backlit so it seems like any marks on the screen would be easier to see then LCDs that are backlit?
