I worked late night maintenance for years.. My success demanded a flashlight on my belt always. I am only speaking to small 1xAA or 2xAA type lights. These flashlights were used every work day in any weather.
The super cheap ones will fail at the switch or spring contacts to the batteries. The Maglight LED started overheating or something as it would blink like a loose wire. I decided it must be a failure in the bulb circuit as everything else looked fine. I paid good money for it and it still stands here to remind me not to waste money on that again.
My best flashlights were mid priced no name LEDs that I would not cry about loosing. The LED will make the batteries last longer but you sometimes have to get used to the color of the light.
Not to slight Maglight, I have several of the D size normal bulb beasts and love them including two rechargables.
My firegear has a department issued LED light that clips to my coat. I don't recall the brand but it is red/orange and works quite well. Too big for the belt but perfect for the fire gear.
